And Google servers are all over the place where as Yahoo has lesser number of server farms and they are concentrated at ajor hubs unlike Google who has their server farms all over the world and thats what makes their search engine faster and their e-mail service more effecient and causes less delays.

Yea u can use multiple accounts to access it.

Hotmail , like yahoo does not provide free email downloading/sending unless u have a Hotmail Plus Account.

I've heard users who created account b4 2006 can access it free, but i'm not sure.

Has anybody tried accessing these services through thunderbird ? It seems to have extensions for many email services. I wonder if they work for free accounts.

Yeh kya ho raha hai? Thread offtopic ja raha hai ...

    Back to topic...

    1. Outlook can be configured to download/send mails from any mail server. This type of configuration is called as POP3. But to configure POP3, the POP3 port (110) and SMTP port (25) need to be opened on the source server.

    2. Yahoo, Hotmail, etc. used to have these ports open in the past but closed it about 5/6 years ago. This is because, if POP3 is allowed, users can get a single mail client to work on for their official and personal mails. One would then rarely visit the Yahoo or Hotmail site for checking mails. This will cause traffic to decline on the mail serveres and consequently ad's will stop and revenue will be affected. Hence they introduced the facility for premium (paying) users only.

    3. Google was a late entrant into the e-mail space. They are keeping such facilities open because they want more users and they do not depend upon ad revenue from mail page. Hence gMail interface is much cleaner.

    4. But just as it is very difficult to change your telephone number, it is extremely difficult to change e-mail address. Hotmail was the first free web-based email service. It has therefore the maximum subscriber base. Yahoo came a year later. There are others such as AOL too. Google Mail arrived in early 2000's. Initially it was by invitation only. People who started using web based email services very early, have multiple accounts but their primary mail remains on Hotmail/Yahoo/AOL.

Here's how to "POP" mail from Yahoo! Mail Plus into your Outlook Express:

    1. From the Tools menu, choose "Accounts."
    2. Select the "Mail" tab.
    3. Click the "Add" button.
    4. From the Add menu, click "Mail."
    5. In the text box labeled Display Name, type your name and click "Next."
    6. In the Email Address box, type your Yahoo! Mail address (be sure to include "@yahoo.com") and click "Next."
    7. Under "My incoming mail server is a…" select "POP3."
    8. Type "plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com" in the Incoming Mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) Server box.
    9. Type "plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com" in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server box.
    10. Click "Next."
    11. In the Account Name box, type your Yahoo! Mail ID (your email address without the "@yahoo.com").
    12. In the Password box, type your Yahoo! Mail password.
    13. If you want Outlook Express to remember your password, check the "Remember password" box.
    14. Do not check the boxes labeled "Log on using Secure…"
    15. Click "Next."
    16. Click "Finish."
    17. Select 'plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com' under 'Account,' and click 'Properties.'
    18. Click the “Servers” tab.
    19. Under “Outgoing Mail Server” check the box next to “My server requires authentication”
    20. Click the 'Advanced' tab.
    21. Under “Outgoing mail Server (SMTP)”, check the box next to “This server requires a secure connection (SSL). Enter port number “465” in the “Outgoing mail (SMTP)” field.
    22. Under “Incoming mail (POP3)”, check the box next to “This server requires a secure connection (SSL)". The port number in the “Incoming mail (POP3)" field should automatically change from 110 to 995. If it doesn’t, make sure the port number is set to 995.

Wait. I thought its not possible to configure yahoo mail for Outlook. Only POP3 they support are through paid subscription OR their own software. Anyway, this is (was supposed to be, not anymore) a new info for me.
