OK. Double post (please excuse this time) ...

Happy Pongal and Makar Sankranti everyone.

A quiz: All Indian festivals vary in date as per the Julian (solar) calendar. So why does Makar Sankranti fall exactly on Jan-14 each year?

(and please do not cheat )

    OK. Here goes.

Makar Sankranti is the days when the Sun starts its ascent into the Earth's Northern hemisphere. On this day, the Sun enters the Makar rashi or Capricorn. In Hindu calendar terms, this is beginning of the Uttarayana.

Since the sun signs are fixed as per the solar calandar, this day is also fixed as per the solar calendar. Transition of the Sun from Sagittarius to Capricorn, during the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere is known as Makar Sankranti. Hence this day is always Jan-14.

Makar Sankranti has many religious significances - Lord Vishnu's great triumph over the asura's, the day when Ganga was brought down to the Earth by Bhagirath, the day when Grandsire Bheeshma decided to give up his life, etc.
