    Default Symbol for Rupee

The Government of India has invited the public to suggest a symbol for the Rupee. Just as the Dollar is universally denoted by $‚ the government thinks the Rupee should also have its own unique symbol that captures a sense of India’s history and culture. Economic Times has suggested 19 symbols. Please vote for the one you find best. ET will present all these symbols ‚ along with the ET viewers’ preference‚ to the Ministry of Finance .

Every symbol resembles $ and are complex. Look at the dollar symbol. So simple it is. They should consult some logo/graphics designers before starting such a poll. I chose not to vote.

He meant, "Were these symbols in the Economic Times site given (or released) by the Indian Govt. to vote upon?"

    The answer is: "No".

You can also suggest a design of your own in their site if you want.

ok thanks, yup the answer is NO, as mentioned in the first post, these symbols have been designed by ET only and they will present this list along with the preffered symbols to ministry of finance.

Yes, and don't forget to miss this chance to get famous. All good designers are always welcome to create some good symbols and post them in the ET site with my name if you want.

I voted for the second last - the one with "r" with two cross lines.

As I think, the symbol must be identifiable, unique and easy to integrate in the fonts. Some of the devnagari style symbols are really nice but will be difficult to incorporate in the language with 8-byte UTF character set.\

I was thinking to vote for that(Second last), but i voted for 4th one, Single "r" with "is equals to" sign at bottom of it.. What i thought that it should be easy to write just like dollar, though there are so many eye catchy symbols but that's not feasible to select too much complex symbol...
