Default Time To Test Your Brain...

    TRY TO SOLVE IT

4 criminals are caught and are to be punished. The Judge allows them to be freed if they can solve a puzzle. If they do not, they will be hung. They agreed.

The 4 criminals are lined up on some steps (shown in picture). They are all facing in the same direction. A wall separates the fourth man from the other three.

    So to summarize:-
Man 1 can see men 2 and 3.
Man 2 can see man 3.
Man 3 can see none of the others.
Man 4 can see none of the others.

The criminals are wearing hats. They are told that there are two white hats and two black hats. The men initially don’t know what colour hat they are wearing. They are told to shout out the color of the hat that they are wearing as soon as they know for certain what colour it is.

They are not allowed to turn round or move.
They are not allowed to talk to each other.
They are not allowed to take their hats off.

Who is the first person to shout out and why?

No. 2 is the first one to should WHITE. (But I knew the answer - I could not solve it for the first time).

No. 2 knows that the man behind him (No. 1) can see him and No 3. He did not shout. So No. 1 is not confident whether his own hat is black or white. If No. 2 was wearing black then, No. 1 would have seen two black hats.

The problem forward is that No 1, 3 and 4 still cannot correctly guess their own colours.

Yes, I tried casually. But, couldnt solve it. Saw, j4k's solution. Nice.

    But,

4 criminals are caught and are to be punished. The Judge allows them to be freed if they can solve a puzzle. If they do not, they will be hung.
According to the rules of the puzzle every criminal can solve it one after another. obviously, the first person will be No.2. but as soon as he shouts his color, every other criminal will also be able to recoginize their colors.

    Yes.

This puzzle reminded me of another color puzzle. this one is lot easier though.

There are 3 gentlemen in a meeting: Mr. Yellow, Mr. Green and Mr. Brown. They are wearing yellow, green and brown ties. Mr. Yellow says: "Did you notice that the color of our ties are different from our names?" The person who is wearing the green tie says, "Yes, you are right!"

Do you know who is wearing what color of tie?

Think carefully again. The others still cannot solve the puzzle.

No. 1 - already knows the colour of hats of No. 2 and 3. Hence, no 2. shouting WHITE has added nothing to his info.

No. 3 and 4 knows that someone shouted WHITE. They cannot know whether it is No. 1 or 2 (unless they can recognize the voice). In any case, they just know that someone has a white hat. No use. They already know that 2 have white hats and 2 have black.

So unless No. 2 shouts "I am No 2. I have WHITE hat". Then what will happen is as follows:

    a) No. 3 will realize that No. 1 can see both hats but has not shouted. So he will guess just like no 2 and shout "I am No 3. I have BLACK hat".

    b) Now No. 1 and No 4 still cannot guess because the combination could be:
    - WHITE-WHITE-BLACK-BLACK
    or
    -BLACK-WHITE-BLACK-WHITE

    It depends.

The first to shout could be either #1 or #2.

How can the first person to shout be No.1? plz mention the supporting logic. Dont say that anyone can shout just making a wild guess.

    I never make wild guesses

the following two cases, #1 can shout first.

    #2 = black, #3 = black -> #1 can shoult "white" first.
    #2 = white, #3 = white-> #1 can shoult "black" first.

If #1 doesn't shout first then #2 will shout first.

 look at the picture. No.2 and No.3 are not wearing black/white hats both. You changed the entire puzzle.

OK, my bad. I thought that picture was just to illustrate the
relative positions. I didn't even notice their hats sorry.
If the hats were assigned randomly then my answer will apply ;-)

In this case #2 will shout white and #3 will shout black.
#1 and #4 cannot say anything and all four will not be freed.

p.s. now where are my glasses....

There are two answers possible to this right?

 How will No.3 know even after no.2 shouts his color. plz go through both the previous posts of j4k carefully. no one except no.2 will be able to get out of this situation.

No, only one answer is possible. Think carefully. a piece of paper and a pen will help in case of such puzzles.

Lemme try to explain. Your second answer is correct and the first one is not.

    The Correct Answer:.....Mr. Yellow.......Mr. Green.........Mr. Brown
    .................................Brown Tie.......Yellow Tie.........Green Tie

    Why?

Mr. Yellow says: "Did you notice that the color of our ties are different from our names?"

This implies Mr. Yellow is not wearing yellow tie.

The person who is wearing the green tie says, "Yes, you are right!"

This implies The person wearing Green tie is not Mr. Green

i.e, Mr. Brown is wearing the Green tie

We have this till now for sure:

    Mr. Yellow.......Mr. Green.........Mr. Brown
    ...........................................Green Tie

Now, Mr. Yellow must be wearing Brown tie as he cannot wear Yellow tie.

    i.e, Mr. Yellow.......Mr. Green........Mr. Brown
    .........Brown Tie...........................Green Tie

    So, quite obviously,

    Mr. Yellow......Mr. Green.......Mr. Brown
    Brown Tie.......Yellow Tie.......Green Tie

Any of the following two combinations are possible:

    Scenario A
Mr. Yellow .... Mr. Green .... Mr. Brown
Green Tie .... Brown Tie .... Yellow Tie

    Scenario B
Mr. Yellow .... Mr. Green .... Mr. Brown
Brown Tie .... Yellow Tie .... Green Tie

Basically, two combinations are possible because each person can select two of three colours.
