In the backdrop of increased racial attacks on Indians, Australia is mulling tougher punishments for those indulging in such crimes, a move aimed at re-instilling confidence among foreign students outraged by the recent incidents of violence in the country. Attorney General Rob Hulls is pushing for a plan where in judges will have to take into account "hatred for or prejudice against a particular group of people" as an aggravating factor when sentencing offenders.

"Tougher sentences will apply to the crimes deemed to be based on victims' race, religion, gender or sexual orientation," according to media reports here. Hulls said he hoped to have the new offence inserted into the state 'Sentencing Act' by the end of the year.

Government ministers, who are distressed at the spate of assaults on Indians in Melbourne, were also considering a longer-term proposal to make "hate crime" a new statutory offence, 'The Age' reported. The move comes after both Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Victorian Premier John Brumby reassured Indian government yesterday that they were taking the issue seriously and that Victoria was still a safe place for Indians to live.

Rudd said he had told Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last Friday that Australia was working closely with the states to ensure attackers were brought to justice and that Indian students were being protected

    Another Student attacked

Melbourne, Jun 5 (PTI) In yet another attack on Indians in Australia, a 20-year-old management student was beaten up by a group of youths here today, the 10th person from the community to be assaulted within a space of a month. Amrit Pal Singh, who hails from Haryana, was assaulted when he was walking to the place where he worked on the part-time basis.

"One of the guys came to me and took off my mobile. When I asked him to please give me my mobile back, he gave me a punch on my face.

I also gave a punch to him. Following which, his 3-4 friends came and started beating me," Singh said, narrating the incident.

"I have told the police about the incident." Singh was the 10th Indian student to be attacked within a month.

Inspite of so many attacks i find there are many students who are still intersted in going to Australia . Why ? of course money . Is money more important than life, that still Indians happen to go there that is my question?

Hi Padma, long time no see...

Most students that go to Australia go there with a view that they will be working alongside studies and pay for their fees and living expenses themselves and also save up some money or send some back home.. Besides that majority goes there with a view to settle down permanently.

You can say money is not as important as one's life but it really depends how ambitious some one is... there may be some one who would rather die then live a life where he/she will be hand to mouth all their life... so really depends on an individuals own perspective.

Forgot to add... going to Australia is more safe then going to Mumbai for most people for that matter... atleast attackers will get prosceuted in Australia..

I am not pointing at any one I just wanted to say that there are people every where who are just there to create trouble.

I never thought of Australians as being racist untill recently and I guess the main issue is this recession and some dumb people in Australia think its the fault of Indian moving to australia which has caused the job market to go down there.. same as some idiots thought in Mumbai...

I don't think we have the right to speak anything about racism when there are riots at Mumbai over marathi/non-marathi, candidates from bihar beat outside candidates coming for railway posts, candidates of bihar get beaten in NE for the same reason etc.

Its the same issue everywhere. people are not getting enough jobs and are trying to go back to their jungle instincts to secure a living.

As a journalist , I do know why Indians go to Ausralia or foreign places . We go there to better ourselves. But at the same time i personally feel India is a happening place now and if we work hard I am sure we can land a job. At least we will not be degraded in our country .
I also wish our present government makes Indians feel safe anywhere . We have the constitutional right to be safe but alas it is not so.
