I am always like that.
Someone famous had this quote - "I might disagree with your views but I will
defend your right to hold those views"
however misguided, racist, jingoistic, ignorant and prejudiced they may be.

There..... That seals it. Admin you can now close this thread. Miss Preeti
has delivered the judgement.
I am totally convinced now, how can you retute that
powerful argument? Hindi is my National Language.
thanks for opening my ignorant eyes Miss Preeti, your argument was
very convincing.
thanks again.

Admin, what are your views about French Vs. English in Canada?

About 65% of Canadians use English as their daily use language and 20% use French and rest other languages as we have a lot of migrant population who bring in their own languages and cultures.
In Canada both English and French are the official languages so everything is available in both the languages.
I speak both English and French but I wont lose my sleep over which one is our national language. I dont care if they declare German/Spanish/Italian/Greek as the national language of Canada as long as everything is available in one of the languages I know.
I see some of you get really touchy about the national language debate but it is not something I would understand or comment about as I have not lived in India and this is my first ever visit to India. I plan to do some traveling when I get a chance and get to know the culture and way of living at the grass root level especially the village life.
I spent some time on a few other forums with an Indian audience but did'nt see anyone using any languages other then English apart from a few words here and there which I don't know was Hindi or some regional language.
50% of the population in the "Hindi" belt
cannot READ or write in HINDI. ( Devanagari script)
Only if the Literacy increases to 80 or 85%
as in Kerala or Maharashtra , the claim
"Majority" of the population "Know" Hindi
can be accepted.!
English ( our versions!) is the Language
used by highly educated population
about 3 % to 4 %, and they dominate every sphere
technical/scientific/legal/medical/space science/ IT
etc .
see maps here.
Literacy Rate in India, Indian Map, Maps of India
Any one can learn a language, for day to day communication.,
specially shop keepers/traders etc.
When we were in Hyderabad (A.P) a shop keeper
( from Gujarat) who could communicate in TAMIL ,
was our first choice, for all purchases ! and we
avoided Hindi ( with all "madrasi"accent and grammatical
mistakes !)>.
So let HINDI ( mostly purged of persian/urdu/arabic words,
and ""Sanskritised"
) be the OFFICIAL/NATIONAL /regional etc
language of India.
It does not matter to majority of people,
who want their ROTI KAPDA aur MAKHAN
(Bread or Chappathi/cloth/house).
As Mao said ' regarding Ideology
or word to this effect. All cats are same in the DARK
as long they catch rats ,
I dont care about their color "!
So In this forum as long as your Technical
problems can be understood and solutions
given In English ( by most users) Let us
stick to English.
@Admin said he did not understand some words in English
script , posted here whether they are Hindi Tamil, Bengali words .
So Use a Language in its own script.
Using Roman Script to teach "Hindoostani"
( amalgam of //persian/urdu/Hindi etc )
to the Indian Army soldiers was an innovation
by the British to teach a common language to
the "vernacular language " groups of India , in
shortest time. Devanagari script is complicated.
I don't have a "wakkalat" ( translation "Brief")
to defend any language!By the way this word is used
commonly throught India!

Did you mean Telugu? See how little (presumably) a person from another part of the country knows about the languages of a region! No offense!
I think one has to be cognizant that Hindi and related languages have a completely different code base and culture as compared to the southern Dravidian languages. So there is no point in trying to push Hindi down the throats of anyone - similar to pushing a religion. It is as unrelated in the interiors as learning Gaelic or Rubdbiyamian (if it exists).
To put it another way, South Indian languages are all different Linux distros and Hindi and related languages are all different editions of Windows, pushing Hindi is similar to asking all Linux users to learn Windows if they have to use computers at all.
At the time of independence, Telugu speakers were marginally less than Hindi speakers, and the number of speakers is an illogical reason to tell anyone to learn Hindi. Just like every one in the country should not become poor because the vast majority is poor. Imagine all people in the Hindi belt learning Telugu today if there were a few lakh more of Telugu speakers at that point.
There are no questions on oneness - a little analysis and discussion never hurts, especially if it is to counter zingoism.
Cheers.
P.S.: I speak Hindi, among other languages.
@GlassHow did you jump to this conclusion ?Did you mean Telugu? See how little (presumably) a person from another part of the country knows about the languages of a region! No offense!
Please refrain from "half baked'"conclusion/s
I DID NOT MEAN TELEGU.!
Para Two
You know i had given my location as Chennai.
The name itself is Telegu based !
And more than 30 to 40% of the population are
persons whose mother tongue is Telegu and settled
in Tamil Nadu and are the businessmen/financiers/
Gold traders/Silk saree manufacturers and
last but not least Movie Producers!
and they are fluent in Tamil also.
( Also people from Kerala whose mother tongue,
is Malayalam
and Kannadigas whose mother tongue is Kannada)
(see I know something ! about languages)
Most of them are fluent in Tamil language,
by need/necessity/trade/business etc.
Why Tamil Nadu has more linguistic groups , you better
learn History of South India !.
I do not want to give personal details about me ,
and sufficient to say, that I have STAYED
in different States, India, and also abroad,
to join this discussion about language/s
We discussed this topic some time ago: http://www.indiabroadband.net/genera...-language.html (National Language)
That thread ended on a nice note though ;-)

I always felt that people should learn at least two Indian languages - the local language of the state and Hindi (if not residing in a Hindi-speaking state).
One should at least be able to make one understood in the local lingo.![]()
Ok, here is what I was pointing out on how much we know of other regions. Telugu is the primary language of AP, though a sizable number in TN speaks it. Both are not from TN! And btw, most people in Hyderabad are comfortable in Hindi too.
No offense, I was guessing the probability of a Gujarati knowing Tamil and living in Hyderabad too small, but understood.
k got it,
just to clarify, i mean that both ppl are frm TN and not both languages
This is a never ending debate. ..
