Call me dumb but who cares, someone care to tell me what exactly is Twitter?

I mean is it a social networking site (which I thought it was), if so then why are some companies on there???????????????

After registering in twitter, you can post short messages (tweets) in your home page ("http://twitter.com/yourname").

Everyone can see these tweets (anyone who knows/finds your address) or you can keep the tweets private among your friends (followers).

You can also send private tweets to selected followers or post reply for a certain tweet.

Normally when you post a tweet, everyone in your followers group will receive this in their home page. And you will receive the message when someone from your following list posts a tweet.
