Thumbs down D link GLB 502T

Few months back I wondered if it is better to rent a modem from MTNL or buy one. Now I feel it is better to rent one.
I bought a dLINK modem. It used to hang after 30 mins. of use. 3 weeks back the the PPPoE light went blank (no internet). It took MTNL one week to confim if the lanline is OK. It was another 10 days of followup that I could get the replacement here in Delhi.
As the warranty period is going to lapse soon, I wonder what other costs will come my way.

Default GLB502T ADSL Router MTNL Triband

Hi everyone.....who is facing a problem in GLB502T Router when connected to MTNL

I was facing a frequent disconnection in MTNL Triband with GLB502T ADSL router and following were the symptoms
    1) ADSL light blinking
    2) Gets connected
    3) Again after 2 mins the connection is dropped and ADSL light starts blinking

I called my computer guy........he said asked me to remove any parallel connection if any......and connect the direct phon line to GLB502T ADSL router.............and WOW my problem of frequent disconnection is resolved.

Every Half An Hour I Will Keep Ice On The Modem
it Will Be Cool And Works 2 Hours Properly
If anyone wants to put ice on the modem then
it should be in a (deep) container (like a steel cup)

I was under the impression that the GLB-502T is a better version of my D-Link 502T. I was lucky as the time when I bought it I have 3 yrs. warranty while now l8ter came to know that every modem+router by them has now been defaulted to 1 yr. warranty except for the high-end ones.

    Default Dlink GLB-502T Issues

    Hi,

If you want to buy a Dlink GLB-502T Modem and want it to connect with an UPS for uninterupted power supply or internet than dont go for this. The adapter/modem goes off with a power cut even though its getting power from UPS.

I had the same problem. Its got to do with how many phones are connected in parallel in your house.
What you need to confirm is that the line coming from the mtnl box outside your house is being connected directly to the modem. Until this is done your mtnl connection won't work.
My internet used to connect only when i used to dial any number from my phone....strange right but try it out. dial a number (any number will do) and keep your phone off the hook your net connection will run like hell. As soon as u keep u'r phone in the cradle..Bang it will stop.
What i would suggest is grab a linesman from your exchange (I did this and got a direct connection into the modem) and ask him to check the connection.
In my case the linesman gave up on checking if the direct connection was coming to my modem. Instead he disconnected the original wire from the box outside my house and provided a new line directly into my house which i connected to my modem.
I did have to get the rest of the phones rewired but that was a simple job. (please note the linesman won't do the parallel connections for u that has to be done by u urself). There is a nice tutorial about basic broadband connected posted by Just4kix please refer the picture right at the end of it for how the connections should be made. It helped me a lot.

2.It is not solved by connecting adapter to UPS.

Now I want to share my experience with dlink support.Various emails are given below-

    Dear Amlan Sarma,

    Problem Category Power Supply
    Operating System Windows XP Pro
Issue Description My problem is I have power supply to the modem
from ups. Whenever there is a minor fluctuation in voltage my connection
gets disconnected. I have also tried direct power supply without ups.
The problem remains. Please give me solution. Yesterday I took modem to
the Service center at Guwahati. They replaced(as it was told to me) the
inside circuit of the modem as it was within warranty period and said
they cannot do anything about disconnection during voltage fluctuation.
I have tolerated this modem for last 9 months and It seems there is no
solution to this problem of disconnection during slight voltage
fluctuation. In past I used modem provided by BSNL on rent. I did not
face this problem of disconnection during voltage fluctuation with that
modem. I purchased this modem with hope that it will provide good
service without paying the rent to BSNL. But I am sorry to say that I am
frustrated with this modem after purchasing it for Rs.1600/-.Can you
suggest any solution for this. Otherwise please help me out to replace
this modem with your any other modem which doesnot give this voltage
fluctuation problem. Otherwise I have to keep this modem in my Wardrobe
    without using it. Please help.

From the email, it seems that you got the power adapter replaced from the Guwahati RMA but still faces an issue if there is a power fluctuation.

So from all these emails I can only learn that they don't have any solution and will blame it on your Home electricity line or UPS etc. I took my router to service center for 3 times, they only replace the circuit and the problem remained same.I also suggested them to do something with the adapter. I also asked them to replace the router with a new router for which I will pay the additional money. But nothing happened. Disgusting.By the way my router was in the warranty period.I am an advocate by profession. But I did not feel to lodge a complaint consumer forum for Rs.1,600/-.SO OTHERS REALLY BEWARE.
