Should have been multiple choice poll. I don't know how forum works on the inside, but I liked the vbulletin, phpbb and MyBB forums I visited. Try installing each of them and see for yourself which is better. You can download install the free forum scripts and for vbulltin, there is a demo website where you can create a demo forum and try it out. My favourite is MyBB script.

Ya, we tried everything hosted on free hosting......

Thing is, we find every software good.....

So, thought of asking a public opinion.....

I also like MyBB, but the problem I found is that the mass email cycle starts only when some user logs in.....

vBulletin is the best of all but it needs to be licensed and paid for. phpBB is free and also popular. myBB is also free.

Note that you will find it difficult to migrate from one forum to another. If you are not too cash strapped, go for vB. My choice would be:

    1. vBulletin
    2. phpBB
    3. myBB

I am running my forum on SMF since last May. Quite happy with the addons and support.

    Merits:

    1. Free

    2. All most all features as in VBulletin. Enough mods and themes to browse through.

    3. Enough support on SMF forum

    4. Well managed and updated

    5. Secure

    Demerits:

Themes look a bit ancient. So very less choice. But the new default curve theme and variations are cool to your eye. Also if you know how to customize the theme, you are at the right place.

    i also voted for smf...

because it has almost everything like vbul and infact some features are not present in vbul which smf has...
moreover the support for new themes are brilliant. and if one knows how to personalise his forum than there is nothing more left to start...

but as meetdilip mentioned the problem is that its theme is primitive, but as new themes come on the way, there is no more problems left..
