Thread: Domain Name = .com or .net or .in ..!!

Hi

Just wanted to know if i get a .in domain name, are their chances to beat the .com domain to the top of the google page???

I can get a .com domain but the name of website does not looks good, but i can get .in domain with good name.

So was confused about it.

Any help would be appreciated!

The suffix really does not matter if the content is good. Google does not give more weightage to any domain suffix as far as I know. The ranking is purely based on inward traffic.

The only thing that will matter is the perception. The ".in" website may be mistaken, rightly or wrongly, for a pure India-centric website.

Actually .net and .org are more preferable than .com by search engine. Google prefers educational content than commercial content. You can very much come ahead of .com in Google rank. But the drawback is that people may forget the .in domain name and instead type .com.

Because of the precerption that .com is better than everything else.

Most people tend to type as .com. I have many times typed Piratebay.com. Luckily escaped due to WOT. So if possible, get a .com domain.

As I said, one reason why .com is popular because it appears to be universal instead of location/geo specific or something like that.

Let us say that you searched for something on Google and got many results. Usually people will click on the first link unless the synopsis is not matching. Now suppose you found matching links (with correct synopsis) from three domains: .com, .co.uk and .co.au. You are more likely to click on the .com link (maybe even if you are located in UK or AU). What happens subsequently is that the .com link starts getting higher ranking.

But this is true for generic info/website. If the website in question is something very specific and niche then .com or .net or .co.in or .org, etc. will not matter.

In my experience .com domains are best if your website targets people from all countries (across the world) via google. .in domains perform better for Google rankings in India over a similar .com site. But .in perform bad in search rankings outside India.
If your site targets indian markets, go for .in

i guess a tld has nothing to do with either the traffic or the google E.O
well maybe i am not very good in this. but i think most of the personal homepages(from around the world) i went through, dealing with a range of personal homepages to technology and internet, their traffic was the prime thing which made them come on the google's top table.

for ex . some days back i wanted to download some pics for wallpaper. a website i landed was dealing with Thailand's beautiful places. the website had a free webhost and a .net.tc domain. (thats free service.)

i was too surprised to see that. because coming in google at a good rank is a plus. but when i saw visitors of the site. it was around a half million(which is nice i guess).. really the content was not lamer, i mean real professional looking site. dont know why the guy had that stupid looking subdomain. and a free webhost. probably he was hosting his images on something else and not the host. whatever, i think i answered some points.

The main reason is that most free host/domain users are not serious about their venture. They start with little or no investment of time, money or effort and loose in mid way. The one you mentioned may be an exception.

Yes, this is true that .com has been very common in the market and everybody is going with it.

However, any domain extension is actually same. At the beginning, maybe your visitors tend to forget your domain name is xxx.in. This is because your site is not popular enough. But, when your website is populated, automatically, people will know your exact domain name.

My last advise is, choose your preferred domain instead of choose the domain name that do not represent your website.
