Thanks for sharing. But if we view this document in a PC without this font installed, it will show ~ sign.

essbebe, Thanks for sharing the info.

This is very good for Word and such documents. To overcome, the problem mentioned by meetdilip, the author can add a note in the document explaining the need of the particular font and steps on how to install it.

However, I have the problem in Excel. There are some solutions mentioned on the web such as use of "symbols.xla" add-in.

But in my opinion that is not a true solution.
    a) If I use the Rupee Foradian font XL add-in method, the cell becomes a character format and I cannot use it for calculations.
    b) If I use the "Rupee" font, all characters in the font are the rupee symbol and hence text becomes a series of the rupee symbols.
    c) What I want is addition of the rupee symbol in the currency format in "Format Cells" option. It is currently possible to do this using "Custom" format but we have to use the Rupee Foradian font only.
    d) I would like the symbol to appear in every standard font like Arial, Times, etc. But these are early days and this may as well happen in a year.

No. Not "Shift+`". Just the "`" key.

I use the rupee symbol in excel with the following workaround,

    1. Insert an extra column just before the column in which the amount is to be indicated.
    2. Reduce the column width to 2 character.
    3. use the foradian font and type the rupee symbol in this column.
    4. use any font of your choice, and type the numbers in the next column. now you can make any calculation you want.
    5. when printed, it would look just as you wanted.

    @just4kix
you are correct. In some web site I read this also, but did not update here.
    http://blog.foradian.com/rupee-font-version-30 new version
but unable to test ,as now i am on Mac OS with USER facilities only.
    * Get the rupee font (it is a .ttf file). (*above)
    * Install by moving it to fonts folder ( C:\Windows\Fonts for Windows). Mac users can install it by simply double clicking the .ttf file and hitting “install” in the dialog box that comes up.
    * When typing, select Rupee font. Press the ` key (the key placed just above tab button) for the rupee symbol.

Please remember that the symbol is currently part of the font only, hence for anyone to see the symbol, they have to install the font too. This will change when the symbol is accepted as a special character, but we have to wait for that

It is a nice workaround but not nearly good enough:
    • Any currency symbol or letter(s) must be as close aligned to the currency numeral and without a space before. For example, $55.99, £19.99, ¥20,000.00, €24.99 and not $....55.99, £....19.99, ¥....20,000.00, €....24.99.
p.s. The forum removes multiple spaces automatically. Hence I have used the '.' character - imagine it to be the <space> char.
    • Going by the method above, what will happen is the printed report will look exactly as explained in previous point.
But as I said, these are early days. The symbol was adopted less than a month ago. Perhaps in six months to a year, we may get keyboards and all fonts having the rupee symbol.

it's a joke.who cares about a symbol.and i don't think it would be too responsible 4 you to say those words considering the fact that you have added a signature that looks like "that" (which does breaks my heart).
and to add weight to my agrument,it took a IIT engineer to come up with that symbol when it could have been easily been done by a mentally challenged crack head.
i don't get it,what is this country up to.is india having an identity crisis?

^^India doesnt have identity crisis.. neither its a decreasing economy..

about my signature, yes thats a real face, but you must understand that Rs. is also the currency sign for Rupees from Pakistan, So i think its good to get a different identity for the Indian money and this is the way it goes..

and about having an engineer doing it, i think the reason is that there must be some reason for a national sign.. everything is researched and than done when it comes to National insignages..
Site from home gaya bhad mein... AIrtel se bolo FUP band kare.. BSNl se bolo 3G signal do!!!!>: (

Yet, its not the best possible solution. But for the moment, its one of the best working solution. I'm also looking for a better option. Will post it when I find it. And in case any one else finds one, please post the same.
