Default [Warning] New iPhone trap. Beware !

Deceitful applications gain access to user profiles and post messages on their walls.

Spammers have found yet another way to target vulnerable Apple iPhone fans. These crooks have targeted Facebook users this time by sending them messages on the social network claiming that their friends have received free iPhones, said IT security and control firm Sophos. These messages, which have been spreading widely since the weekend, invite others to participate in the scheme. However, the messages are being sent by rogue applications that users have allowed to access their profiles and post messages to their walls.

Messages appear as status updates and many read as follows:

"Just testing Facebook for iPhone out :P Received my free iPhone today, so happy lol... If anyone else wants one go Click here"
    Or

"Anyone want my old phone? Claimed my free iPhone today, so happy lol... If anyone else wants one go Click here"
Facebook users who click on the link advertised by their friends are then asked if they want to 'Allow' this application to access their basic information. Participants who allow this are then redirected to a webpage which will earn commission for the spammers behind the scam.

"Facebook users need to learn to think before they 'like' and 'share' suspicious pages on Facebook. Just because something appears on a friend's wall, it doesn't mean that it is from a reliable source, " says Sophos.

Affected users should delete references to the free iPhone scam from their wall, and remove the offending application from Account/Application Settings.

It was only last week that micro-blogging website Twitter was hit by the MouseOver JavaScript flaw exploit. This was just 24 hours after Twitter was hit by a 'Who To Follow' link based worm that sent out Twitter updates with profane language related to goats. Recently Orkut too was under attack by a worm known as Bom Sabado.

We hear about spammers and hackers targeting the susceptible user via social networks every other day. Despite this, the user base of these community websites is widening fast. This only means that the spammers have a larger audience to target. So, it's time to become a bit more vigilant and not fall prey to their objective.
