Default Is racism a part of Indian society/politics?

i was just going through ndtv and they have the same $#it of racism over u.p elections. :|
i was just thoughful, was i ever racist to my "other caste' friends?
i was thinking if i ever 'didnt eat their food or drink their water"?

do really people live like that way in India? if the answer is yes how are we surviving even after so many world wars..
what was our 'racial history" before muslims and english invaded India, were there any good people or just all bad:| ?

in my family, we are brahmins, some are fairly skinned, some are black (near to afros) some are chocos. so we all have to discriminate each other? and if someone is leading a good life because he worked hard on it, he has no right to say " i am satisified with what i have achieved"..

    descent replies pls

We often talk about racisim in UK, Germany, Australia, USA and as such completely forgetting that we are in our heart very much racist. Our racism is further classified by religion, class, creed, breed, colour, etc. Why else do have these "khap panchayats" and "honour killings"?

    very much true!
Just open the Times of india/hindu/hindustan times- sunday Matrimonial advt section
wanted groom....only saiva vellala ...balija naidu...vadakalai iyengar.... brahacharanam iyer ...only palghat brahmin...nair,,,,prestigious namboodiri family only need apply...etc etc .

In villages - sc/st feelings are still a bit too strong. if the current son/daughter is even IAS/IPS , higher caste wont even drink water or eat in their house.
we are very much a rascist society. it takes 3-5 generations to change old beliefs.

i see a very cunning approach of some idiot "powers" behind whats going on in it.. and this election scene is seen as a handle to further break the hindu social system(or lets say for a minute vote sections) terribly..
    please read the following:

"dalits have two major sections, 1. dalit 2. mahadalit. dalits are comprised of jatavs and the likes. while mahadalits (the more backward people) are those of the likes of "valmikies". - as they were discussing on ndtv.
now mahadalits are those who dislike jatavs (because jatavs hate them for doing far more dirtier jobs- which i think is just to create an environment of hatred in the society).
i see it is an act of sabotage of some segments inside of this democracy who want to come out as single largest political fragment in the state..

i can just wish to the God that this act of sabotage doesn't comes out with success when we have the results. and dalits chose their representatives with a very mature understanding and not going into the $3it that was discussed on ndtv.. dalits are poor(most of them) they need more help and quota is one way already there. if they dont vote together for themselves, power will go into vain...

and i am also happy that finally the racial $#it has openened not only the minds of people now, they also know how to vote and elect a person. and they also supporting a person who will do work for them and not just merely for "linked socially". also political $#it companies called "parties" are so much afraid and nervous of the situations that they cannot understand what to do
India is far backward.. lets move ahead..

    Jai Hind!!!

    @ALL ABOVE..

i started the thread to discuss something positive.. now let me answer some of the stuff people wrote above 1 by 1.

j4k said we are divided in different color race breed et etc.. thts true but not very much. Indians are far mature in this issue. you can look at america or europe(if you like to compare), before even blacks arrived from africa to various parts of the world (u.s eu) they were fighting to one another. in europe they call spanishiards they black europians just because they are little more tanned than the rest white.. we never went into those details. we have a God name Krishna who is black and we all like his blackness. millions have died in racial hatred in europe. in america in the old days yankiees faught to the rest of the southerners and verses all.. spanish killing italians, and dont forget about china where they all were fighting inside the country. what is the last racial war in India before the muhammedens and english arrived? maybe it was ashoka who was killing thousands of buddhists.. but even him converted to it :P

the point i am taking here is "racial killing". we are a very mature society even if we are racists. far mature. we can smile even with a low caste person or someone who is black or white. atleast i never mattered it. friends called me bengali, i simply got proud of it.. sometimes it was for mere fun..

you can take out many many instances in our history when the "higher castes" gagged on lower castes.. but how many of you can give a list of historical evidences of ethnic cleansing.. like they have all over the world.. or give me a country which is so united with 3k by 2.5k area and so many genes together..living together and struggling in life.. you can make europe a single country with India's size. they have more or less same color, and not much differences in their genes except the jews and the muslims of albania.
