    Default National holidays in India

Does any one in the government ever bothers to think how many public holidays we have in India? Apparently it’s the highest in the world. The amount of lost man hours we get due to these useless holidays is just idiotic.

Why do we have a holiday on 2nd of October? Well Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi would spit on your face if he knew his birthday is declared a national holiday and the whole nation doesn’t work on his birthday and gets behind the whole world by one day and looses so much production and the work which could be done in that one day.

Gandhi ji never said he would like to see his loved nation to sit around and do nothing to celebrate his birthday. If I was in power I would declare Gandhi Ji’s birthday as a day when every one would do double shifts and I am sure Gandhi ji’s soul would bless me for doing it.

Gandhi ji wanted our nation to progress and be able to stand side by side with other developed nations but hey we decided to sit our ass instead and loose his birthday as a day when the whole nation does nothing but listen to bhajans. We can all remember the great Gandhi ji by working all day and having a loud speaker with his favorite bhajans running all day long.

Disagree with it? Well say it then and get heard by millions who will visit this page in the years to come. J

I would be very interested to find out who when and why declared 2nd of October as a national holiday and this was just an example for argument sake there are lots more useless holidays which don’t make sense.

You have written what and that have been in my mind long time. Yes, indians are the ones who enjoy maximum public holidays than any other nation. I can say that in U.S. there will be hardly 5 to 6 federal holidays while we are having more around 20 per year and apart from that we do hartals and strike to make it even worse. The people who enjoy all these holidays are state and central govt and bank employees!!

Default Well Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi would spit on your face

"Well Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi would spit on your face", I think one shud weigh his word, and most importantly its implications before making such a bold comment. A man whos very fiber of existence advocated non-violence would'nt spit on ur face, for sure....I completely agree to what you are trying to convey, but plz mind ur words, u may end up being disrespectful to someone who deserve nothing but respect.

I agree there are too many holidays in India.

I think people in power try to please all religions
and hence each festival has its own holiday.

I have a proposal, Each religion has 2 holidays per year + a couple of general
    holidays

    Divali, Pongal/sankranti/dassara + 1 regional festival
    Christmas, Easter
    Bakrid, Ramzan
    Mahavir Jayanti, Budha Jayanti.

    +

New Year, Independence Day and Republic Day.

    so total of 12 days.

That is to be expected in a Country which defines "Secularism" as importance to ALL religions rather than importance to NO religion.

I'm really surprised that you guys who work for long and at odd hours are against having so many holidays, dunno if its out of jealousy or just that many essential services are getting disturbed coz of it.

I'm divided about having more holidays. On one side, I feel that something useful can be done if the holidays are reduced but on the brighter side I feel the holidays give us the much needed break from our hectic lives (personally I feel I'm partial to having more ) and give time to do our perosnal work etc.

while everyone states that we have highest number of holidays, maybe we have correspondingly lower stress levels too i guess.

Yes I also like holiday but that not the reason, I believe national holiday in the Gandiji's birthday is appropriate but I feel strange that in Netaji's birth only Bengal gets holiday in all sector (central govt & state Govt) but i don't know why ,Netaji was the leader and freedom fighter of India not only for Bengal.
Yes it's a debatable question that how many person remember or celebrate it to give the respect of the great leader in that particular day but i still believe that holiday is necessary.Otherwise people will forget 2nd October by their daily routine or pressure of work and future generation will forget it more quickly(not all may be the majority) like how many people remember the day of 30th January or 23 January (accept WB,Orissa) or 27th September.
I am not saying all these days should be holiday but at least "Father of nation's" birthday should be consider as national holiday. If few person want to celebrate that day in little different way like reading, writing or discussing about him ultimately it will help our nation to progress because history gives us a idea that how create our future plan. Also if this day does not consider as national holiday then few people will not get such opportunity.

I am sorry, i have reopened this OLD thread again but i just curious to express my feelings... No matter whether its a religious holiday or a holiday for giving respect and remembering all our national HERO who sacrificed their lives for INDIA but how many GOVT employees do their work seriously even when they are on duty hours

Figures show that every government staff is entitled to 104 days of weekly (Saturday-Sunday) off, 20 days medical leave, 30 days earned leave, 8 days casual leave, 2 days restricted holidays, 20 days half-pay leave and 17 gazetted holidays. Together, it entitles a government staff to 201 holidays a year. This leaves just 164 working days annually… Great Democracy and Government policies
I hate our Government and GOVT employees who are just getting paid for nothing….
