WEP Security I have three unprotected networks signals from neighbors with more then 50% signal strength and I know for sure that one of these is from a home who has a limited data transfer plan from MTNL.

Its amazing how so many people can be so ignorant about little things like this and then they cry about huge bills..

That is absolutely correct. When I was in Birmigham 2 years ago, I used to surf for free the same way. It probably does not matter there because plans are mostly unlimited.

But even if your plan is unlimited (and you are not too concerned if someone is parasiting), this is a big risk. Someone could post questionable or highly malicious material on the web. Just the other day there is a report in Pune papers where a person from Banglore was falsely accussed of maligning Shivaji's name on Orkut. He was falsely accused but he spent 50 horrowing days in prison. He is now suing Pune Police and Airtel for compensation to the tune of Rs. 20 crores.

There are even people who don't know what download and upload is in India and have got broadband connection and end up paying huge bills. How can such people be knowing about wireless security. I feel that its the duty of the ISPs to do such measures to protect their customers, the onus lies with them and not the customers!!

Just 3 votes from entire community? Come on people, if you vote and post questions on "What is wireless security?", "How to implement wireless security?", etc. many of us would be glad to help.

My sincere appeal: if you have wireless at home, please do secure it.

You have voted that you have not implemented Wireless Security as it is too technical for you. You can post your questions on this.

Wi-Fi security is very important. Did you know that during the recent Ahmedabad bombings, emails were sent from a user's wireless BB connection because it was open? Let not the same happen to you.

I do not have wireless network. But I might go for one. Could you please suggest the best modem for it, and also explain how to implement wireless security to my mini wi-fi network at home.

Implementing wireless security is easy. Read the wireless security primers and one the guides on Linksys that I have posted.

@zammed, Linksys and Netgear make the best wireless routers.:taz:

    Thanks again.

And, do the modems come with wireless security (with CD and user manual)? I hope so. Because, it's mandatory these days.

All wireless routers come with wireless security features. This is standard, else no one will buy them. CD and manual are part of the package. CD is more or less useless.

ya there is no use of CD if you know how to config router manually... and trust me manual config is faster than this auto install process

    Post wireless security

Hi 1st many many thanks to just4kix,this is a very useful thread..keep it up

I am very worried about my newly installed bsnl broadband connection security. My problem is my modem is nokia siemens SL1_141,and it is in PPPoE mode with the passward and id installed in it (done by bsnl agent).some of my neighbours are accessing my net through the wireless, and I can see them in network & sharing centre but I can not do anything as I also dont need to type the passward & id everytime I open it...it is installed in modem itself.

I was looking for any way to switch off the wireless facility as it seemed t be simplest...but could not. IS THERE ANY WAY TO DO THAT?

So that only 2 or 3 comp can surf through wire?

    or..

Can u please help me to use any security options (and how to)

    Default WPA shared key ?

I have a laptop with wireless connectivity. Now, if I filled WPA shared key in router setting page and save, then where to put that key in my laptop settings to connect it through wireles. My modem is WA3002G4. I am running two desktops through LAN and one laptop wireless.

    Waiting for quick reply.

When you try to connect to the wireless network you will get a prompt to enter the network password on your laptop screen automatically.

Its my good fortune that I was facing disconnection problems and I joined this forum... in couple of days I got to know all about implementing wireless securities by the security primers posted here by J4X... And then I chose WPA standard to secure my wi-fi network..

Even two of my neighbours are using BSNL wi-fi routers... Which r not secure... But I don't use their bandwidth cuz my night unlimited plan is sufficient to satisfy my appetite for downloads... And I don't care if I marginally cross my bandwidth limit of 2.5 GB by surfing... As my subconscious mind doesn't allow it... Though out of curiosity I once logged-in one of the routers by using the default password... Admin will u change ur display name ever?

i heard long time back , also this was on all news channels that a person has sent a threatening mail to the President using a unsecure wi-fi connection. security agencies found the person by using ip address . the person was an nri, he claimed that someone else has sent it using his unsecure wi-fi connection . probe is still on. and i doubt the real culprit can ever be caught.

now the Govt has become wiser and says that it is the responsibility of the user to ensure that his/her wifi network is secured.
in case of repeat of the same incident, in the revised scenario, the perrson whose network was used would be treated to have aided and abetted terrorism and would be put in jail and tried under the National Security Act.

    Great step!!!

if someone has wifi he should also be responsible for it...

regarding loopholes, we cannot just think of it.. cause its the company, and i think its responsibility of company to ensure security...

WPA2 can be broken buddy so who will take responsibility then? A crime investigation should be done so that innocent don't get harassed. Of course you can penalise a person if he don't implement anything.
