Default New PC Configuration - Opinions wanted

I asked my local assembler for a Intel Quad-core PC with 512 MB PCI-E graphics card, 4 GB RAM, 300 GB HDD, 22" monitor. He is quoting me Rs. 75k. What do you think?

    1. Motherboard: ASUS P5K-E / WiFi-AP Socket 775 Motherboard
    2. CPU: Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Processor Q6600, Architecture: 65nm, LGA775. Clock Speed: 2.40GHz,Front Side Bus: 1066MHz
    3. RAM: 2 x DDR2 2GB PC2-6400 800MHz Dual Channel Patriot PDC22G6400ELK
    4. Hard disk: Maxtor 300GB Serial ATA/300 16MB Buffer
    5. Graphics Card: EVGA 8400GS Video Card (PCI-Express, 512MB)
    6. Display: Samsung 22" LCD Display (1680x1050, 1000:1, 5ms)

    Hi friends,

    No reply?

I wanted to know whether I am being overcharged. The same fellow promised a Core 2Duo, 1 GB, 256 MB Graphics, 160 GB HDD, 17" LCD for Rs. 25K.

I want to be (somewhat) future proof and hence I asked him to quote a quad-core. The price difference is 3 times. Is this worth?

Or, I have another option. I am traveling to California next month. I can buy the major components out there at FRYS.com. Should I go that route?

    Yes definately
75k is exorbitant price for above configuration

Thanks. I am also waiting for another quote. The problem with the Indian PC assemblers is that they just focus on broad specs. For example, I want 4 GB memory @ 800 MHz or 1067 MHz. This guy was not sure and is unwilling to commit, etc., etc.

The advantage with buying on your own is you can decidedly pick and choose. Here are the prices at FRYS.com:

    1 Motherboard ASUS P5K-E / WiFi-AP Socket 775 Motherboard 169.99
    2 CPU Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Processor Q6600 319.99
    3 RAM 2 x DDR2 2GB PC2-6400 800MHz Dual Channel Patriot 89.98
    4 Hard disk Seagate 750GB Serial ATA/300 16MB Buffer 149.99
    5 Graphics Card EVGA 8400GS Video Card (PCI-Express, 512MB) 68.97
6 CPU Fan Thermaltake 1U Copper 775 CPU Cooler Fan 39.99

The above with CA Sales Tax (8.25&#37 comes to $908.12 which is Rs. 37233/-. I may manage to "get by" customs. In India, I can buy Case, PS, DVD-ROM Drive, Peripherals and Display and keep the cost to less than 52K~55K.

I am not a pc hardware or assembling expert but from the outset, i can easily guess it that the price mentioned by you was a bit higher than the normal prices for all the configuration you have mentioned here. For this price or lesser than this you can even buy Dell which has better service too!

OK. I got some clarification. The price was was quoted at 57K and not 75K. There was a typo mistake in the mail from the assembler. When I actually received the printed quotation, I thought the prices were on the fair side:

    1. MoBo: 8200/-
    2. 6600 CPU (Quad): 12000/-
    3. 4 GB RAM: 4200/-
    4. Graphics Card: 3400/-
    5. Seagate 750 GB: 8600/-
    6. Cabinet w/400W PS: 2600/-
    7. DVD Writer: 1300/-
    8. 22" Viewsonic LCD: 15000/-
    9. MS KB/Mouse: 800/-
    10. All-in-one Card Reader + Others misc.: 1900/-

I don't mind going the DELL way except that the DELL machine configured to my specifications will cost 74K + taxes. That is why, I was not very surprised from the earlier mail quote that just mentioned 75K. The dealer was actually saying 57K as per my previous post.

Well as your going for desktop, i must say have it from here only.

& NEGOTIATION is the word what i wanna suggest u. It can definitely reduce few bucks from the figure 57K.

Thanks. I am also thinking on the same lines. If I run into issues, I may be able to run to someone.

Exactly what your *cough* meant. Customs duty is 40% on personal baggage. There is an exemption of Rs. 25K but that applies to personal effects only. Computer components, etc. cannot be counted as personal effects (a laptop is allowed fully exempt). Customs duty is calculated based on actual bill or customs' valuation (whichever is higher, of course), 10% freight is added, add 40% customs duty on base value+freight. On this sub-total (base value + freight + customs duty), a 4% octroi is applicable. Hence it is better to "get by" after slipping a $50 ~ $100 based on value of goods imported.

Yes. My current PC (P4 @ 2GHz, 512 GB RAM, 120 GB HDD, 256 MB Graphics, 17" CRT) is locally assembled.

I do have very hard views on piracy. I just think that customs duties on personal baggage is too high. I am willing to pay customs duty and I have in the past:

    - when I imported my Onkyo TXDS-747 5.1 amplifier receiver, I paid Rs. 18,000/- as duty
    - when I purchased my Pioneer 3-disc DVD player, I paid Rs. 7,000 as duty
    - my Bose AM10 speakers cost me Rs. 12,000 on duties

On all the above, I was allowed Rs. 12,000 as exemption (as it was then). I have receipts for the above, if someone wishes to inspect.

My grouse is that I can purchase a laptop abroad and pay no duty but if I am bringing in components, I am asked to pay 40%++ in duties. And these things do not count in my standard exemption. I can understand that if I was going to bring in hundreds of such items. I will pay duty then. I sincerely believe that these are my personal items, not for sale or profit and should be counted in the personal exemption. I am more than willing to pay duty on the differential cost.

As per the exemption list, any Indian citizen is allowed to bring in (import) one laptop without duty - irrespective of cost. Customs will not even look at the laptop as long as it is the only one. I travel abroad frequently (four times last year) and everytime I could leave India without a laptop and come back with a brand new one on return.

Warranty/support is owner's responsibility. Reputed companies like Dell and HP do support international warranties. No idea about Acer. But warranty is for one year only and after that repairs are paid for. Nothing happens to a good/reputed laptop for two/three years anyway.

dont go for the older FSB i.e. 1066mhz opt for 1333mhz it is a lot faster as i own
one of the motherboards supporting 1333mhz FSB

and your motherboard is obsolete ask for Asus p5n32e-sli or if you have the dough go and buy EVGA 790i ultra SLI motherboard As its name implies, EVGA nForce 790i Ultra SLI motherboard is based on the latest high-end chipset from nVidia for the Intel platform. What is new on nForce 790i compared to its predecessor, 780i, is the support for DDR3 memories and PCI Express 2.0 support generated by the chipset itself – nForce 780i was in fact an nForce 680i with an additional nForce 200 bridge chip making the conversion between PCI Express 1.0 and PCI Express 2.0. Both chipsets support 3-way SLI mode, which allows three GeForce 8800 GTX's or three GeForce 8800 Ultras to be connected together, and Quad SLI, allowing two GeForce 9800 GX2's to be connected together and enjoining four GPU's, as each GX2 is powered by two GPUs. Two of its three PCI Express x16 slots are PCI Express 2.0 and this motherboard has also two Firewire ports, optical SPDIF output and more.

and one more thing please do remember to buy a good power supply from reputated brands like antec or VIP.Power supplies from these manufacturers are costly but they are woth to buy and dont forget to buy a good CPU cooler do not opt for the stock intel metal CPU cooler buy a cooler made from copper from cooler master or some other good brands and if you can afford buy cooler master aqua gate S1 then see the performance of your rig and your rig will run cooool.
