I am also using free download manager and do not have any problems
make sure that in the download options under network tab - traffice usage mode put it to heavy mode, max number of connections to 60 and max number of connection per server to 12, uncheck if you have checked decrease traffic usage when browsing

In the network optimization master under the options menu set the set the connection to 10/100 MB LAN, apply these settings and let me know if the speed improves

As far as free download manager is concern you cannot open that file

because, free download manager like any other download accelerator cuts the files in to smaller segments and download so if the segment are not put together then it cannot be viewed

still you want to view that incomplete file then you need to the folder where you had asked to save the file and then in the folder options choose "show hidden files"

The free download manager would hide the file until the download is complete
