I own canon powershot A95 camera which my friend brought from U.S. If you ask whether digital or powershot, i would say digital for novices or genral users and SLR or professionals.

Current I own Kodak Z-650 P&S. I used to own Nikon Coolpix 3100 and Nikon L6. I intend to buy Nikon D80X or D300 but have not come to justifying the cost as yet (I own Nikon N70 film SLR which I don't use as often as I should).

If you need D-SLR camera look for something that you can get service locally in Pune or in India easily... check out availability of lenses and easy of usage....

I am currently using OLYMPUS E-410 and Canon EOS 400.... Canon has various easily avaiable lenses in India... But I personally liked OLYMPUS.... Note that OLYMPUS manufactures its own lens and only ZEISS and OLYMPUS optics are known as best in the worldover... Moreover OLYMPUS has infinity corrected lenses.... Achromat, apochromat, etc etc... you wont find them in Canon....
But this is just my opinion you can try out somehting else to... or just for some point n shoot ones...
another fine combination is Canon S3IS....

Canon D-SLRs are the best. If someone wishes to buy a D-SLR I will say "buy Canon". Unless you have a huge investment in lenses (that you can use in D-SLRs also), go with the leader. Nikon/Olympus are not too bad.
