Smile Safe to keep computer on during afternoons?

Now that the temperature is soaring, is it safe to keep the computer on during the afternoon?

I have a P4 3.0 GHz, 1 Gb RAM system; a problem I face all the time is that the noise from the CPU fan increases; I dont know what it means, whether the computer has become hot, or whether it is processing more data, or whether, as many people have told me, it is just the fan trying to get rid of dust. My CPU fan speeds up like anything, and stays that way for a long time.

So, suppose you don't play games, is it alright to let the computer run during the afternoon? Apart from games, are there any particular apps that heat up the computer? What about HD movies?

Thanks.

The speed of the fan depends on the temperature of the system

There are sensors on the motherboard which sense the heat and the BIOS controls the speed of the fan accordingly

Fan getting rig of dust, that is bull sh*t, it is kind of funny

Any way there many reasons the temperature going up
One is environmental change like the outside temp going up and thus the internal temp also will go up

Second one of the fans goes bad, most of the systems has 2 or 3 fans and if one goes bad then the other compensate with higher speed, check if all the fan are working fine

Third as you mentioned playing games, games are processor hungry application and they consume more processor so the processor needs to work more and thus it generate more heat.

I had this kind of issue in which if i am playing a game which is high graph then my fan rpm goes up , if i am just surfing the net the temp goes down and the fan rpm goes down

I have a 865 GBF intel motherboard which has 3 sensors on board and this controls the rpm of the fan

I have bought a bad chassis in which it is not so temp friendly so when ever i play a high graph game i just remove the one side cover this brings the rpm down, i have also added a additional fan in the system which i kind of mounted directly over the processor fan this help a lot and keeps the system cooler even which i am playing high graphs games in the afternoon but i do remove the cover of the system

Dont worry much if you dont have any fan failure , if you have a fan failure get it changed

Hmmm... I can see only one fan on the processor.

Problem is even when I am surfing the net, the CPU fan is huffing and puffing.

Mine is D102GGC2; don't know how many sensors it has.

Thanks.

What about the fan in the power supply(smps), is that working?

I placed my hand at the back of the cabinet; there is a flow of air coming out, which means the SMPS fan is working, right? Although, the air is pretty hot...

@hydraheaded
my system is running almost 24hrs keeping in mind power is coming..
my configuration is...
Intel core2duo E6550 2.33ghz
ASUS P5N-E SLI
nVIDIA GeForce 8500GT 512 MB graphics card
1GB ram
400 W power supply

and i am most of the time gaming and system is running cooool not a single noise....keeping in mind all the fans are working properly and the ventilation of air is going smooth...

in your case just do one thing which i am telling you....you have to do autopsy of your PC..

open up your cabinet and remove the fan which is on the processor and remove the heatsink.....keeping in mind PC is switched off..
and give a deep blast of air into the heatsink and notice the amount of dust which will be blown away!!, then reinstall everything back, then i am sure noise will be reduced.
If possible apply some thermal paste on the processor then install the heatsink.

If there is additional slot try to add a fan of 120mm which costs around rs100

And there is no need to worry about "is it safe?" it is always safe, motherboard and processors have sensors that if the temperature increases beyond the critical limit they will stop functioning to avoid further damage.

And yes HD movies will affect your pc if your pc hasn't that much horsepower

Try applying some new heat sink on the processor... if you don't know how to do it take it to some computer guy who shouldn't charge you more then RS50-100 for this.. make sure the heat sink which he spreads on the processor is of good quality.. You will see instant results and your fan noise should come down.

The reason I am asking you to try new heat sink is that after a year or two average quality heat sink tends to dry up and crack and this often leaves some air inbetween and the processor tends to get too hot which makes your fan work at high speed which inturn creates a lot of noise.

Pentium processors are designed to shut down after they reach dangerously high temperatures.. Ever used a laptop and accidentally blocked the air passage? well it shuts down on its own after it gets too hot but had it been an AMD.. they just keep on working and melt themselves down.

Please shout again if new heat sink doesn't solve the issue

PS: By heat sink I dont mean the whole aluminium thing but the gel thinggy which is applied to transfer the heat from the processor to the aluminium thinggy.

@Admin
the gel thinggy is called as thermal paste.............and you are wrong about AMD processors they also have a critical temperature at which when the processor crosses that temp. it automatically shuts down....not melts down

AMD processors do melt down when overclocked, i.e., they get fried.

LOL Thanks Player , thats the word I was looking for.

Any idea what brands are good or bad and how much does it cost and what size packages does it come in?

AMD might have started making processors now which shut themselves down but untill 3 years back this melting story was true as I have done it on two of my boxes myself. AMD's were not very good when pushed too hard.

Overclocking is another thing and if you are doing overclocking then there is certainly a chance that you processor will end up pretty badly .......i have done many times but my processor somehow survived if you push it too hard then the system will simply refuse to boot monitor will go blank..........this a different story...................here we are talking about heating issues(i think)

I don't think that thermal paste is that cheap

I think it will cost Rs 250 for a pack of thermal paste

You are correct and definitely well informed. I just stated something that I heard quite often.

p/s. Ask me something on Supply Chain Management and then you are talking to an expert (so-called)

It depends upon you on which brand you select there are cheaper brands available and higher ones also..............its the price for the quality of compound used in the paste

The price which i mention is the minimum i mean bare minimum to buy a thermal paste from a local brand.................i am living in a small city(i should say gaon)...here these things are rare people hardly know these things...so i would not be able to name the brand

I think it is still safe to turn in on during the afternoons as long as you wont keep it for long periods of time.

Also try to face a fan at the back of the PC or on the CPU.
