What do you mean by media converter? Do you mean software that convert video into different formats (AVI, MPEG2, MPEG4, 3GP, etc.)? There are plenty available including freeware. Search the net. I use the following:

    a) MainConcept MPEG2 Encoder (not freeware)
    b) TMPGEnc Plus (free for MPEG1 encoding, MPEG2 encoder is to be paid for)
    c) SmartRipper (freeware,for ripping DVDs)
    d) DVDShrink (freeware, for backing up DVDs including 9.4GB DL DVD to 4.7 GB SL DVD)
    e) DVD2AVI (freeware)

I use the above two quite frequently for my video work. Then there is a freeware rom DVDVideoSoft that can convert video from one format to another.

There is no such thing as "fastest" DVD burning software. The term that you are looking for is "safest". DVD burning depends upon the speed of the disc and the burner. Any software that offers buffer underrun protection is good. Nero is good in that respect.

Windows/XP comes with a default DVD writing software.

There are no freewares that I am aware of but when you buy a DVD writer, usually you get a DVD writing/burning software.

Iam using "total video converter" (registered) It can convert any type of audio and video formats
Total Video Converter supports generating the following file formats:

    Video Formats:
    · MPEG4(.mp4) · 3gp(.3gp, 3g2) · Game Psp(.psp) · MPEG1(.mpg, mpeg)

    · NTSC, PAL DVD mpeg · NTSC, PAL SVCD mpeg · NTSC, PAL VCD mpeg

    · Ms Mpeg4 AVI(.avi) · Divx AVI(.avi) · Xvid AVI(.avi) · H264 AVI(.avi)

    · Mjpeg AVI(.avi) · HuffYUV AVI(.avi) · Swf Video(.swf) · Flv Video (.flv)

    · Gif Animation(.gif) · Mpeg4 Mov(.mov) · Apple Quicktime(.mov) · FLIC format(.fli, .flc) · Gif Animation(.gif) DV (.dv)

    Audio Formats:
    · MPEG audio(.mp3, mp2) · Ms WAV(.wav) · Ms WMA(.wma)

    · OGG(.ogg) · Amr audio(.amr) · AC3(.ac3) · SUN AU format (.au)

    · AAC(mp4 audio)

But it is slow. For converting 700 MB video file (.wmv) to >mpg format for DVD burning it is taking around 2 Hrs
My DVD witter is LG and IN CD software is supplied along with the same itis very slow.

Encoding is a resource intensive process. I have converted my home videos (Hi-8) to DVD and this is the time it took on my machine (P4/2 Ghz):

    a) capture time = length of source video
    b) editing = 2 hours per 60 minutes. I added lot of entry points/some animation/cameos, etc.
    d) encoding to MPEG2 using Mainconcept = 1.5 hrs. per DVD
    e) DVD authoring - motion menus, chapters, etc. = 30 mins per DVD
    f) DVD burning = 20~30 mins on 4x discs

I made some 5 discs in all.

To speed up, you will need:

    a) For encoding: faster/multi-threading processor such as Core 2 Duo/Quad
    b) Fast burning: High speed DVD writer and high speed discs (at least 16x)

Even though the writer is 20x, the max speed is lesser of the two - writer speed and disc speed.

So how much time does it take for you to burn a DVD? I am only talking about burn time.
