there's only one marathi sentence i know "samudrat pohaden haanikaaraahe", i saw this written on the juhu beach wall in 2003. i am a north indian and was living in bombay for a yr.

btw why wud any1 want a tag of maharashtriyan? aren't they secure from where they belong... its like you go to u.s.a and want to be called american... u'll always remain indians... jackasses... and whats the advantage of being called a maharashtriyan anyways??

In Punjab there are millions of people who come from Bihar and UP to work and save up some money and go back to their native places... some settle in Punjab but weve never had any issues there ever.

I cant remember this politicians name.. who called for changing shop names to Marathi.. why would some one be forced to do that ? Go anywhere in India and you would find boards in English only, Hindi or just the local language and no one has an issue with that...

I am not taking sides... I just dont understand the whole hing so it would be great for some one who is in the know to come around and enlighten us all about this thing.

I do not think we should be known by our states. Yes, we should be proud of the local language and culture but nothing beyond that. I am a Maharashtrian by language but I am an Indian first - excuse me if this sound like a cliche or taken from 'Chak De'.

There is a certain politician in Maharashtra (we all know who it is) who is trying to spread division for his own ultirior motives. Maybe some of the issue he has raised are genuine but he is least concerned by them. His aim to gain popularity and achieve power. People in India are suffering - from rising prices, traffic, job uncertainity, interest rates, etc. It is very easy to turn such frustration into hatred and directed towards a particular community. Such incidents sow and re-enforce mistrust and communalism.

America is great today because it encourages migration of the best people into its own arms. Comparatively, Europe is loosing its edge because it is discouraging migration or allowing country specific slective migration. Why do we raise a hue and cry when Indian doctors are being evicted or not allowed in UK?

But this debate will turn political, regionalistic, communalistic and fanatic soon. So not to delve too much on this, let us propogate peace and harmony.

Go to south india, u'll unable to find a single board in hindi; they'd boycotted hindi from their day to day life including buisness, board syllabus, from everything.
They are enjoying combination of their native language!
So what marathi leaders shd do? They shd boycott hindi from daily activities, thats d best way to save marathi. Because people coming from UP and Bihar hardly know english, so if they want to sustain here, either learn english and/or marathi. English, WTF?? Will they??
And whats d big issue is script of marathi is same as devnagri, so I think by changing shop names to marathi, that'll help us these outside floods.
For them reading a devnagri board will be much easier than english.
So I think if v want to improve status of marathi, we shd stop speaking hindi.
And v shd stick with english and our native lang. (in my case its marathi)
So admin, start speaking in punjabi to every stranger u'll come to know. When I visited Chandigarh last time I was shocked to see local residents including college guyz communicating in hindi, So please next time v meet any stranger v shd not use hindi, thats d effective way to save local indian languages!

@just4kix, even I m outsider. My native place is goa(father) and mangalore(mother). And my mother toungue is Konkani, but I m a part of maharashtra, I insist with speaking in marathi. Stop d nonsense of portraying urself as d true indian. By doing it, no matter u'll gain the support of outsiders(even here) but I know u cant afford to lose status of marathi in d heart of maharshtrians. U r maharshtrian and u shd b proud of that! Oh! I am proud to be Maharashtrian. I speak only Marathi at home - so do my parents, my wife and son. We do not speak English with my son as many others do nowadays. I am proud of P L Deshpande, P K Atre, Kusumagraj and other Marathi literature greats - we have their collection at home. I am proud of Shivaji and the Peshwas.

But have you ever wondered why India was ruled for over 1000 years by foreigners?

• Because after the death of Harshavardhana there was no ruler who propogated unity (till Akbar).
• Because Jaichand of Kannauj hated Prithviraj Chauhan's guts.
• Because kingdoms of India did not unite against Qutub-ud-din Aibak.
• Because there was no Rajput unity against Allaudddin Khilji and later Babur.
• Because Aurangzeb decided to follow a policy that was detrimental to the Hindu-Muslim unity from the time of Akbar.
• Bajirao Peshwa went all the way from Pune to Bundelkhand to save the humiliation of Chatrasal against Mohd. Bangash but Rajputs did not aide Sadashiv Rao Bhau (Nanasaheb Peshwa's brother) again Ahmed Shah Abdali at the third battle of Panipat.
• The Marathas were so weakened by that war that they were in no position to oppose the English or help Tipu Sultan (and I doubt whether they would have helped him anyway).
• Ultimately it was cakewalk for the small but excellent disciplined army of Robert Clive and Warren Hastings to lay the foundation of British Empire in India.

Read and learn from the history and propogate peace, harmony, brotherhood and unity and it will be returned to you in favour.

So I cannot subscribe to the fact that:

- by having Marathi name plates we are going to become great.
I deplore this fact from South India states also and they are wrong. By saying that we also will do what they do we are also wrong and two wrongs do not make a right. What I believe is name plates should be in Hindi (and optionally in local language and English). Actually one thing should be granted to Raj Thakrey that he is not insisting Marathi only; he is saying 'also Marathi'.

- we should kick all non-Mahashtrians out of MH.
Today it is lower class Bihari's and UP'ites. Tomorrow it will be South Indians (well Shiv Sena already started with SI's way back in early 70s). Next in line will be richer people. Germans did that with the Jews, Idi Amin did that with Asians, etc. All met with disasterous results even though the rest of the masses agreed with them and they brought tremendous suffering to the people. Neo Nazis are doing it to Asians in Germany now. Once again America is great because it promotes migration and free economy. Raj Thakrey is emulating these "great" people (incl. Aurngazeb).

Absolutely not. If that is the case then I do not wish to be called Maharashtrian or associate with such a community. I have the right to move to any part of India for job/living or otherwise, have the right to settle there, buy property out there, etc., etc. That is why I say that Article 357 that grants special status to Kashmir be scrapped immediately.

My father was a mining engineer and my childhood has been spent in Bihar, Orissa, Rajasthan, Gujrat, and West Bengal. If we start an anti-non-Mahastrian campaign there will be repursussions. Families like ours would be slaughtered outside MH. This is what Raj Thakrey's propogonda will bring ultimately.

Just one point. It is nice to say that I live in the present and for the future. Very true. We Indians have lived in the past and still continuing to do so.

I never advised to live in history but learn from it. It will be sheer folly to completely disregard the past and not take lessons from it.

Why do experienced people draw more salary than freshers? Why are old men generally associated with wisdom (some are senile, of course)? After all what does one mean - learning from experience. Is it not learning from self's history?

So think. Be a good human being.

p/s. Because I completed so many posts, Admin kindly gave me permission to have a self title. But this facility may be extended to a lot more people. Soon , a lot of people will come up with titles of their choice and some could be real "kick ass" titles. But a title does not mean anything. It is what we do that defines us.
