We have three major river basins in Maharashtra:

    1. The Godavari Basin covering Nasik, Jalna, Auragabad, Beed, Parbhani, Usmanabad and Nanded districts.
    2. The Bhima Basin covering Pune, Satara, Ahemednagar and Solapur districts.
    3. The Krishna Basin convering Karad, Kolhapur, Sangli and lower Usmanabad districts.

There are lot of major dams on all these rivers such as Koyna, Jayakwadi, Ujni, etc. Pune alone is served by 4 big (Varasgaon, Panshet, Mulshi and Veer) and 2 small dams (Khadakvasla and Temghar).

All major dams are full and are constantly discharging water into the rivers so that flood like situation (yellow alert) exists on areas downstream.
