Default A pickle - Hathway Cable modem to connect to Netgear DG834G

    People

I am in a slight situation.

I want to achieve the following:
I want to connect my Hathway Cable Modem which I was presently using wired to my Laptop.
Now I have also got a Netgear ADSL/ROUTER DG834G v3(4 ports) which I want to be connected to the cable modem and then access my internet wirelessly with 3 laptops.

I have tried various combinations -
    1. connect lan cable from cable modem to router and try to access the internet - NO LUCK
    2. disable DHCP on the router, connect to the modem and then access it as a Wireless AP - NO LUCK
    3. connect lan cable from cable modem to router and then connect laptop via the lan cable to the router - NO LUCK

    Am I missing something ?
Am I doing this the right way ?
Am I better off getting a cable modem/wireless router combo instead ?

    Help greatly appreciated.

The cable used for connecting the modem and the router...what was it? Cross or straight through?

The ethernet port at the back of your cable modem should connect to the internet/dsl port at the back of your Netgear router. Then of the four switch ports at the back of the Netgear router one of them should connect to the laptop or PC whichever you use. Make sure DHCP is turned on on the Netgear and set the connection type in the netgear to Dynamic/Automatically assigned. It probably could be set to pppoe/pppoa and you need to change that. If it still doesn't work - turn off your computer, netgear router and modem. Wait about a minute or so and first turn on the cable modem and wait for the cable light to turn on or flash. Then turn the netgear on and wait till the lights on the netgear stabilize a little and turn your computer back on. If you have the cables and connections and settings right then you should have a connection. If you want to use it as a wi-fi access point you probably need to get into the netgear router config and set WEP/WPA keys which you would also configure on your laptop.

Shouldn't we disable the DHCP in the Netgear to make it act like a switch? And IP addresses can be manually assigned right, after disabling DHCP.

When i said turn on DHCP I was talking about the DHCP server for your local network. If you disable DHCP for your LAN then yes you'd need to assign IP addresses to each individual PC/Laptop in your network which will connect to/through the Netgear.

Talking of disabling DHCP to make it act like a switch - these routers are actually switches with a little router/gateway functionality added. You dont have to disable it to make a switch because it already is a switch. It adds on a DHCP server and a gateway to simplify network management because all devices would need to be assigned an IP address (if not hard coded manually) and a gateway if it's to connect to a different network like the internet.

Alright guys ... I have tried everything which was said in this.
I bought a crossover cable (RJ45 to RJ45) and tried that as well ... YET NO LUCK !

I spoke to the some of the technicians and told me this is the way, still this just does not seem work. Any other options ?
A new cable wireless modem ?

I just had a look at the DG834G Manual and it looks like it's an ADSL Modem cum Router. Now that means it already has an inbuild ADSL modem and if you connect this ADSL modem to a cable modem it obviously isn't gonna work. And I believe the port at the back of your Netgear which you connect to the Hathway modem is RJ11 (phone port) whereas the port at the back of the Hathway modem is an RJ45 which clearly means that the DG834G modem/router cannot be used in series with the Scientific Atlanta modem that Hathway provides.

So the best alternative is to get a new wireless router (with no in built modem). I personally use a Linksys WRT54G coupled with my Scientific Atlanta cable modem to connect two wireless laptops and a wired desktop and test server and it's been very stable.

    Point Noted HexWiz Sire.

I shall use the Netgear DG834G for another purpose / sell it if need be and go ahead and pick up the Linksys WRT54G as you have mentioned.

    Thanks !

    Dear friend
I am Using Hathway with Scientific Atlanta cable modem. I tried connecting it with Belkin 802.11g wireless router ( F5D7230-4 ) but I could not connect to the internet on PC ( which was connected to the wireless router ) or on Laptop ( which was connected to the router wirelessly ) I had set DHCP on on the router and set "Obtain IP automatically" on both PC and Laptop. Can you please explain to me step by step how did you configure your wireless router and/or PC, Cable modem etc.??

    Thanks Ahead

P.S. Hathway has tols me not to use the IP assigned to me, instead keep settings on " Obtain IP automatically" since past a year almost.

    @HEXWIZ - Thanks a tonne mate !

@ash3012 - Here's the way to do it.
    1. Disconnect the modem & Router
    2. Connect one Cat5 cable from the modem into the WAN port of the Router.
    3. Connect second cat5 cable from one of the LAN ports on the Router to your PC / Laptop.
    4. Start the Router (make sure DHCP is enabled and it obtains IP automatically)
    5. Wait for 10 seconds
    6. Start the Modem now.
    7. It might work however if it doesn't, call up Hathway and tell them you have plugged in a new Router. They will ask you for the WAN MAC address and then clear the binding.
    8. That should do the trick !

Let us know how it went.

Yes that's what they told me too but it stopped working a few days later. So i forced the static IPs back on my Linksys and it's been rock solid. So try using the static IP which was assigned to you and see if that works. I do understand hathway is probably running short of IP address space but looks like misinformation has preceded the actual implementation of DHCP on their network. Once you;'re done with forcing the IP address turn your setup off - wait a few minutes and turn it back on. Good luck
