Default How to Enable wireless connectivity for my house

    Hi,

I currently have the cable internet wire going directly into the LAN (RJ45?) port of my laptop.

Everytime i need to use the internet on the desktop, i have to disconnect from the lappie and connect the wire to desktop.

I had bought a Linksys WAG200G wireless router in anticipation of getting an MTNL connection but ended up getting a hathway.

Can someone advice me if and how i can use the above router for my current need. If i can't and have to buy a new router, please suggest one.

    Thanks a million!

http://www.indiabroadband.net/hathwa...ar-dg834g.html (A pickle - Hathway Cable modem to connect to Netgear DG834G)

    1.Please go through above thread.
    2.Please give.Hathway CABLE modem details Model/Type

3.As WAG200G is ADSL modem+WIFI router, it may not be possible to use in Hathway CABLE BB network.
As per discussion in above thread you may need Only a Wifi Router.

    hey bro,
    thats correct.
even i have a hathway BB connection they provide it thro a dsl modem,
what you can do is buy a Dlink Dir 300 or a belkin both cost around 1800/- and use that for wifi connectivity at your home.

    Default will do that...

....Bummer though, cause now i'll have to hunt around for a buyer for the WAG200G.

@essbebe...I always thought that since it was a ADSL modem PLUS a wireless router, that i can get away with using just the wireless router part of it.

Anyway, I am gonna hunt for some wireless routers and will probably need help from you guys to decide which one to go for.

Default Hathway cable BB : to get wifi mode.

    @bmanrockz.
    Update
Ask Hathway for a wifi enabled Cable modem.
Say you want to use your laptop in WIFI mode.
( if you have no intention of changing ISP ( phone line based )
    try in the shop.
Google search: Cable modem with wireless.

    1.Mention the modem model make
provided ( if any) by Hathway.
    Is it Scientific Atlanta ?

So the best alternative is to get a new wireless router (with no in built modem). I personally use a Linksys WRT54G coupled with my Scientific Atlanta cable modem to connect two wireless laptops and a wired desktop and test server and it's been very stable.
    2. deleted.

    3.Try this.

After ensuring Internet is working alright in normal condition,
(a)remove the Rj45 from computer end and
connect to LAN1of the WIFI unit.

(b)Connect another RJ45 to computer and test.
    If Ok
    (c)try WIFI.
    Feed back please.

    4.
    Post these data
Start run type cmd type ipconfig /all

Why don'y you'll take a wireless connection instead? tata Indicom Photon+ is doing a great job in the market. Even Reliance Net connect seems to be decent.

He can use WAG200 independently from an
ADSL Broadband provider. ( could not get MTNL )
    Hence Hathway.

Try what i had suggested and report +ve or negative.
Main SNAG you don't have a WAN/Internet port
    in the Linksys router.
That is why only wifi router was suggested.

Probably too late but I happened to stumble across your

post while attempting to do the same thing. Couldn't find any

sites about it, but after a bit of playing around, I figured out how. I

had Verizon DSL, just switched today to Optimum Online Cable

modem. Was using the same Westell 327W, optimum provided

    basic cable modem.
-Connect cat5 cable from ethernet port on cable modem to

ethernet port 1 on westell. (Must be port 1)
-Connect cat5 cable from computer NIC to other port on westell.
    -(You may need to) Start->Run->cmd
    ipconfig -release all
    ipconfig -renew
    Here's the trick...
-Open web browser, go to westell homepage (likely 192.168.0.1)
    -Configuration tab, Advanced WAN->WAN
-Change WAN PORT drop down from DSL ATM PORT to

    ETHERNET PORT 1
-Click Edit button. Change Protocol from PPPoE to

    ROUTED.

-Radio button for DHCP Client to Enable.
    -Click Set button.
-(You may need to) Power cycle both Cable Modem and Westell

    device

That should be all, you should now be able to connect to internet

through the Westell DSL router. I may have left something out,

but if so, hopefully these directions should be enough to get you

on your way. Anyway, it is possible to use Westell DSL router as

a (wireless)router for your cable modem. Good luck.

    .................................
Thanks this help, I tried this and it works, two thumbs up

Like essbebe said, WAG200 is an adsl modem+router so it expects an adsl signal on the WAN port whereas the scientific atlanta modem from hathway has an ethernet out (also USB) and hence the mismatch. But if you'd still want to make use of the WAG since you already have it, I have a very logical yet untried assumption here but you could try it out and just might work.

You are gonna need two NICs on the main desktop. Ethernet cable from Scientific Atlanta cable modem comes into NIC1. Make sure you are able to connect to the internet and able to browse from the desktop which would preferably be running Windows XP. Once connected, enable and configure Internet Connection Sharing on the desktop.

NIC2 from Desktop then connects to the Linksys WAN Port. On the Linksys configure the connection type as Automatic-DHCP and set your wireless settings, save and restart the Linksys. You could then configure wireless on your laptop(s) which will connect through the Linksys and through the XP and to the internet.

The catch with this setup however is that your desktop pc/gateway needs to be on when you want to connect to the internet from the laptop.

Another thought and this didn't work with me but I guess I could still share:
All linksys "routers" are by default configured as gateways. But there's an option to set it as a router. There's a possibility if you could do that and set the cable modem as the gateway you would get connected. And I did try, but my cable modem just wouldn't route. I wonder if the modem just doesn't do it or something with my settings. If only I could change the routing table in the Linksys but the GUI on a Linksys is so functionally bare.
