Default IRC Not Working

Hello everyone

I am using Hathway's 64kbps Unlimited plan (I know, I know, its slow, but still I like it ).
Alright, so I've been using Hathway for over a year now and there were no problems at all, until now.

I like to use IRC and you know, I'm addicted sort of, and I only like to use the Undernet irc network, I have friends there, a reputation etc. etc. lol, but seriously, a couple of weeks ago my computer stopped connecting to Undernet. All other networks work, except Undernet.

I am not a n00b at all, I've done reinstalling my Windows XP, my IRC client etc. etc. and I also have a software firewall which doesn't interfere with IRC connections (as I have configured it).
But after all that, nothing works, it doesn't even connect and says 'Connection Timed Out'. After some searching and stuff, I came to the conclusion that maybe Hathway has blocked Undernet....I at first thought the problem will get fixed on its own and I waited, but nothing as of this time.

I didn't try calling them, as I wanted to confirm...
So, I request all Hathway users who are reading this, please try connecting to: irc.undernet.org at port 6667 and please tell me if it works for you or not. I can't live without IRC I'm addicted ya know

PS: For more information on Undernet, goto Undernet dot org (lol, I can't post links here yet) you can get an IRC client (mIRC) from mirc dot com
and alternatively you can also try telnet for this: in the command prompt, type: telnet irc.undernet.org 6667
If the telnet screen just freezes at 'Connecting...', then you can't connect, else if it says 'Looking up your hostname' or something similar, then it works
I would really really appreciate your help on this

Thanks in advance

Hi gastly,
Undernet is working fine JUST NOT FROM India ISP's! I am from Airtel and all Airtel users were blocked from Undernet IRC from the last week of August!!! I just came across your post and realize that Hathway has a problem too. Now we need to confirm that whether other ISP's like BSNL etc too have a problem or not. If so, we really need to publicize this issue!!

I would post links here of complaints by other users, but I can only post links after I make 15 posts, so please email me at lenkite DOT gmail DOT com.

I am building up a community of people who use IRC undernet and are now unable to do so. We have no idea of the reasons..maybe router problem at international gateway? (wild guess)

Best Regards, Tarun

Hi lenkite

I hope you got that email I sent you.
I'm willing to join any community you wish to create regarding this issue. So Let's make it big! And we need more people with us...

So, this is to all other Hathway/Airtel/Any other ISP, users. Please feel free to contact lenkite or me regarding this issue. We will be glad to have you with us and if all the ISP's of India are blocking Undernet on purpose, we are sure to give them a piece of our mind. It's our right of free speech and we will surely use it!
When Blogger.com got blocked, we made that issue big and now if Undernet has been blocked on purpose we're gonna make that bigger. We just need your help and support, that's all.

Have fun people, and we hope to see you with us on this, take care

I doubt if it's the ISPs, because there is a fair chance Indian IPs have been K-Lined - which in IRC terminology means - denying access. It's been quite some time since I haven't been on any of the IRC networks but I have been an administrator on some servers during my heydays. And I've seen a lot many servers deny connections from Indian IPs. Even Pakistani IPs are victim to such due to the amount of spam and abuse origination from these regions.

Also K-Lines can also be local to one server or it could be a network wide ban. If it's a local ban then you would still be able to connect to a different server which doesn't have your IP/host K-Lined.

So you could check this out with the IRC server admins and that would be easier to do than wait for all IRC users in the country to poll in. And considering the fact that there's not a single IRC server from India in any of the popular IRC networks, cribbing about being denied access doesn't seem too reasonable considering we dont share the load at all - IRC servers are real resource and bandwidth hoggers.

So the issue could be better resolved if India could share the load of IRC access by setting up some servers. Then we could have our I-Lines for Indian IPs - allowing access and K-Lines for IPs from other countries - "don't ride on our bandwidth and resources!"
