Exclamation Having a cold?? Don't take these medicines!!!

So one more article for the health of fellow Indians and IBBians, because we all know that it is only us here that are responsible towards our health, the Government gives no sh** about you, nobody does, but i do , and you should do too.

Do you know that most cold and cough tablets here in India still have the chemical phenylpropanolamine which was banned by the FDA a few years back!!??

And why was it banned?? It was because it showed an increased risk of a hemorrhagic stroke in women.

    Read about it here.

By personal inspection i have found it is available in a 25mg quantity in the tablet 'Okacet Cold'. I will find out more medicines still using it here in India soon.
I guess D-Cold was in a soup some years back because of this.

More cold medicines using the above banned chemical: (thanks to saurav_kataruka)
    D Cold
    Vicks Action- 500
    Actifed
    Coldarin
    Cosome
    Nice
    Nimulid
    Cetrizet-D

So my advice to you, the next time you have a cold, please bear with the sneezes and a runny nose for some time, it will go away by itself in some days.

More such banned chemicals still in use in India below (thanks to amitkool21)

actually i had a cold a few days back... took a tablet for it, happen to see its ingredients, searched for each, and found this to my shock...

at least i'm not a female so possibly it doesn't affect me that much but still who knows it might be harmful to males too?

Its always nice to spread awareness Starry. Maybe we should make a list of all the medicines with this banned substance and send out a mail to all IBF members ?

Pseudoephedrine and Methamphetamine are other decongestants which was restricted in certain countries owing to the same ill effects.

Methamphetamine is used in Vicks Inhalers as cited on Methamphetamine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    SK, good information.

Actually it is even more dangerous to give these to children.
Please check the ingredient list for PPA in any cough
or cold medicine before giving to young children.

Don't worry, the chemical used in vicks is not the 'drugs' variety ;-)

"The levorotary (R-isomer) levomethamphetamine is an over-the-counter drug and used in Vicks Inhalers for nasal decongestion and does not possess the CNS activity of dextro or racemic methamphetamine. "

Meth is a "bad" drug. There is a "not-so-bad" variation
of this drug that is used in Vicks.
