I dnt think u missed anything special. the books are better than the movies anyway. but its my own opinion and doesnt apply to others.

Hmm, well the problem is i kind of like the movie as i started to watch some of the first one! Its a good way of knowing what happens and saves some time, i dont know why but taking time out to read is just like impossible!
But i will defiantly give the books a try whenever i have some time!
I missed that post, as that time i was away remember!
Preeti, if you like reading then I would recommend reading Harry Potter books. Believe me, the movies do not do justice at all - well the first two movies are OK and follow the book 90%. But the other movies are big let down to the books - especially Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (which I happen to like a lot).
I am a serious reader - I like to read serious literature such as by Sir Walter Scott, R L Stevenson, Charlotte Bronte, Jane Austen, Alexandre Dumas, Charles Dickens, etc. And yet, I am much impressed by J K Rowling. She has a very lucid style that appeals to everyone.
Many people spurn HP books calling them kiddish - I believe that they are stupid with closed minds. I am OK if people are not readers and therefore have not read HP books also. But many snobs told me that they like reading class stuff only - I asked a friend what he means by class and he said Robert Ludlum! Now really!! Robert Ludlum is a great author but that kind of fiction hardly classifies as class. And I happen to like Robert Ludlum too.
One criticism against JKR is that she has plagarized a lot of content from JRR Tolkein's work and some from Star Wars. To some extent, I agree. But being the largest selling author of all times is no mean feat. People said Anil Kumble is a bowler of no class, spins the ball by mistake once in a blue moon. But this (freak) guy is the 3rd highest wicket taker today.

I third that. You won't get the effect of reading the Book when you watch the Movie. But they have tried their best to recreate the scenes & characters in the Movies. Like when you read about a character in the Book, you will try to imagine them in your mind. They will look 90% similar to the one in the Movie.
well, since u guys like to read like I do, I am going to suggest some more childrens books u would enjoy. everyone knows about famous five and those novels, so I m gonna leave em out. Many people have not read the works of Edith Nesbit, another woman writer. Find her books and trust me u wont leave them till u r done reading.some books by her---
Something Wrong
The Story of the Treasure Seekers
Five Children and It
The Amulet
The Railway Children
The Enchanted Castle
I don't like reading childrens Books. I am a fan of fantasy/fairytale stories. And I don't read Books anymore.![]()
these are fantasy/adventure stories. its just that children are involved.
that doesnt mean that these books are kiddy. I personally can vouch for E.Nesbit .
If she had media coverage and were a single mother like Rowling at her time, she would have been a much bigger attraction.
Thanks for the info J4K, i will surely try to read the book in my spare time, I don't personally believe that only class stuff is good, as any book can be good, no matter what it is based on. What matters is the text and the quality of writing.
Snobs will always be snobs!![]()
Uncle u cant call me narrow minded just because i[we people] think that HP is kiddish :sneaky2: ...... How can u jump to the conclusion that we do not read widely ?? .... y ,i have even read Narnia,Noddy , Famous Five , Hardy boys , Diadem etc etc etc and ofcourse all the HP books [long back].... And i still consider all of the books as kiddish ..... And i believe i have read nearly all the classics [King Arthur , Tom Sawyer , Shakespeare [abridged] etc etc] ...
So i am broadminded enough to read books on a varied subject so i have a right to judge ,ain't i?
PS : The above mentioned books are just a sample set of what i read ..... My actual list would be very long i believe [broadminded]
Good Book
Try reading Authors such as Jane Austin ......... You ll blown by the complexity of ideas [relationships mainly] and her deep understanding of the human mind ...... you ll understand what i mean by kiddish
New Book
JKR just released a new book ....
The Tales Of beedle the bard
Reception was nt as good as HP series
Its a story that is featured in one of the HP books [forgot which]

of course we cant compare Rowling with Austen, Emily Bronte and lot. There is a huge difference. In literature innovative ideas are as important as the understanding of human mind or reflection of society. They all contribute to building a much wider horizon for literary fields.
This is the reason why I completely agree with J4K. Harry Potter series is very innovative and as for copying Tolkien, every fantasy novel after "the lord of the rings" are influenced heavily from it. Rowling's work is very authentic and...................wonderful.
Having said all this, I still feel sad to see a younger generation which pays so much for flashy publicity but fails to recognize/associate-with the past talents. Mainly parents are to blame for this. And I think this is the point Shadowcon tried to emphasize on. People are not born with good taste for lit, they acquire it from immediate environment and people.

@ShAdOwCoN, You have misunderstood me. I said something like:
I call such people closed minded. If someone reads them and still finds them kiddish then it is completely a personal opinion and I shall respect that.People spurn HP books and do not make any attempt to read it because they think they are kiddish and books for children only.
I am glad you read a lot. I have a moderate library at home and I am a genuine collector. If you hunt for some my old posts, I said somewhere that Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is the second best book I have ever read (The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas is my all time favourite).
The biggest contribution of JKR has been she has persuaded people (especially children) to read.
ok i did not read your post properly :surrender:
i agree ..... she made reading fashionable , and more importantly genuinely enjoyable to today's kids....
I am under the impression that You do not like Modern Authors such as Brown , Tom Clancy etc as much as the older ones ..... Am i correct?
--> Well yeah thats one point i was trying to emphasize ...
I will not discount JKR's ability to invent such a make-believe world .... But u must agree that JRR Tolkien steals the thunder in that category ... He had to think up Uruk-Hai , Hobbits ,Oliphaunts etc ... when there was no tv . computer etc to fire away your imagination .... I truly think he was a genius
When i first read LOTR
i was thinking
wtf , this guy[JRRT] has packed one semester's worth of Poetry , Literature , Geography , History , Fantasy , Languages , Zoology etc etc in one book !
And he made it up all by himself ! !
I do not think jkr can be accused of Plagarism .... its taking intellectual property right issue a little too far

I do enjoy modern authors as well - Robert Ludlum, Frederick Forsythe, Irving Wallace, Jeffrey Archer (a particular favourite), Tom Clancy, Leon Uris, Dan Brown, etc.
I have a lot of bestsellers in my home library (DVDs are not all I have).
i was introduced to both LOTR and Erich Von Daniken when i was in 7th grade, my father brought two books (LOTR and Gods Were Astronauts) for me from his office library. I was immediately mesmerized by it. Between 7th and 10th grade I bought and read all the books by Tolkien I could lay my hands on. You cant imagine how many hours I spent at college street second hand books market to buy books with my pocket money. And I actually found "The book of lost Tales" from that place.Originally Posted by Evander Leopold

PS: Did I mention that I started liking dictionaries right when I startrd LOTR.![]()
So we got quite fond readers on the forum then! Good to see this!
yeah me too ..... Spent so many hours in British Council Library's couch
I spent so much time reading during my school/college days that i am one of the few people (vip) to be let into the American Consulate [Their library is present within] without frisking/checking (because i know every single of their staff there]
yeah, i remember when I was a member of BCL and American Centre here in kolkata.those were great days.
Actually my BCL days inspired me to start a movie collection, the kolkata centre has a tremendous Movies Archive ranging from old tape disks to dvds. I saw all the Cary Grant, Rock Hudson's movies when I was a member of British Council Library.
But American Centre here in kolkata has very tight security (because of the attempted bombing several years back) and its library is not that good either. They used to show 1 or 2 good movies every month though, I went whenever I could.
all the 5 movies are guud but the 1st 2 movies are the best coz they are directed by Chris Columbus who was also the writer of young sherlock homes any of the movie series can be guuud if it was directed by the same director......
when is the next one coming out...
Seriusly, I must be the only guy who hasn't read the Potter series...
Do you guys think its possible to understand & enjoy the movie without having read the book ?
