    Default The Matrix trilogy

    The Matrix trilogy

The Matrix trilogy is a series of science-fiction-adventure films written and directed by the Wachowski brothers. It stars Keanu Reeves & others. The first film "The Matrix" was released in 1999. It was followed by two sequels, titled "The Matrix Reloaded" (2003) and "The Matrix Revolutions" (2003).

The story is set in near future where the machines rule over the humans.
Computer hacker Neo is contacted by some underground freedom fighters who explain that reality as he understands it is actually a complex computer simulation called the Matrix. Created by a malevolent Artificial Intelligence, the Matrix hides the truth from humanity, allowing them to live a convincing, simulated life in 1999 while machines grow and harvest people to use as an ongoing energy source. The leader of the freedom fighters is Morpheus.
In one scene,Morpheus says that "Humans are no more born, they are grown.Morpheus, believes Neo is "The One" who will lead humanity to freedom and overthrow the machines. Together with Trinity, Neo and Morpheus fight against the machine's enslavement of humanity as Neo begins to believe and accept his role as "The One".

Its a wonderful movie. The movie has very good story & concept. Sometime I feel "Am I in the real world or in the matrix". Even though I watched the movie (all 3) several times,I have many doubts in the movies, like:
Why do they use telephone to move between the real world & matrix?
    What is Smith actually?
    Who is Oracle?

Every small thing in that movie has a meaning...The more I get to know about the movie, the more I get confused. The movie also touches some concepts of several beliefs of Hinduism.

This movie is a very good topic to discuss. Lets share what you people understood from the movie.

Finally, Are we living in the real world or....

I think that there should be sequel of the three waiting to be made.
As the third movie ended, I was not actually happy, because .......you know why.....

I don't think that the series will end there. Because, as the 'Oracle' (I hope the name is correct!) tells the little Indian girl (I don't remember her name), I also think that Neo will come back...............

Same here, it was a terrible sight to see neo sacrifice himself. and even if neo comes back, without trinity he would be without a suitable pair.

Dunno abt the telephones thing --- maybe they connect to the matrix servers thru dial-up connection ()

Smith is actually a program designed to get rid of threats to the matrix , in this case, the people outside matrix.

Thats why he keeps repeating he has a purpose, ie to destroy the freedom fighters.

And as quoted by the architect neo is opposite of agent smith , ie as good vs eveil, to keep the world balanced. One tries to protect and other tries to destroy.

    Oracle - no idea.

From my understanding of matrix , the reason why i liked it the most,

It tells that mind has great power over body.... things which we normally take for granted as impossible, are possible, IF, we have will power and confidence.

    @rameshjee

    1. They dont use landline phones to travel between real world and matrix,
the whole concept is that in the future machines have taken over everything. human are incubated, breed and sustained inside a gigantic lab, they are in a semi-conscious state and are used as machines to manufacture resources(heat energy) for the dominating machines. a program was designed and plugged in to those human-brains through cables so that they feel that they are alive and goin through life in a real world (which has calamities, accidents, births deaths and all). The main reason for this was to keep them is a stable condition. Some escaped this fate and formed a rebel group fighting against the machines to restore freedom to humankind (the same rebel group u saw fighting in the last film). Now, some human minds are so powerful that can actually control the data flow of the matrix itself rather than being manipulated by it. Morpheus, the rebel leader and a learned person was in search for such a man. when they found Neo they knew he had such powers. But in reality Neo was actually trapped in a semi-conscious state as the rest of humankind and was living a virtual life inside the matrix. So, trinity and morpheus went inside the matrix ,located Neo and then located his real body in the real world and set him free. At first it was hard for Neo to believe the fact that from his birth on he had been trapped and was living his life in a virtual world. U all know the rest.

Matrix is a very complex film and its very hard to understand. I hope my brief description helped some to understand the actual concept.

Now, back to ramesh's questions. In the real world every person is fitted with a plug-slot in his neck which connects to his brain. when he is plugged in to the matrix servers his mind travels though the wires and enters the virtual matrix world. But they also need a command/code to get out of matrix. the land line phones in matrix world are fitted with that code. when executed, it safely logs out the human brain from the matrix server.
U have all seen Neo performing awesome tricks. but all of them are performed inside the matrix world, in real life neo is just a simple man like u and me. His brain was so much powerful that he could bend the matrix codes with his brain signals and thus able to perform those stop-bullet, slow-mo tricks.

2.Smith was designed as a guardian to the matrix protecting it from the rebels. It was created by the machines. its a program or rather a virus. But ultimately it grew so strong ( mainly because of its coded moral values , this is why people say that its good to have thoughts but bad to have beliefs , if u know what i mean ) that it became a threat to the machines as well as mankind.

    3. Think of oracle as a very clever fortune-teller and an extremely learned person.
She was also living her life inside the virtual matrix world. Her brain was so powerful that she could actually see the trend/pattern of a code and predict the future impact of it on its environment ( all real life gr8 fortune-tellers and philosophers work on this basis too ). This way she was able to predict the presence of a powerful mind like Neo.

U guys cant imagine how much time and energy I have spent into science fiction.

    Nice Explanation !

I ll try explaining the concept again
Many people have been living in this virtual world believing it to be real . But if you realise that you r living in a virtual world it is possible to bend the rules of that world ....

For example If you believe you are dead in the virtual world strongly [believing it to be the real world] , you ll also die in the real world [in the incubators]

So when Neo realised that he was living in the Virtual world all he had to do was believe strongly in something and he was able to perform that in the virtual world [that is bend the rules].

I just about liked the first film only.

The 2nd and 3rd are quite a drag. I like to think that they were made just to cash in on the popularity of the first.

Usually in case of hit trilogies the following events happen:

    a) The first movie creates the concept and the hype.
    b) The second movie cashes in on the hype created earlier. It is usually just a shade of the earlier but it makes more money on the box office. The movie has a logical end but it leaves a definite possibility of the third.
    c) The box office results of the second movie make the makers think that a third installment should be offered. It is not better than the previous but the studios had given a permission of a trilogy only and hence it reaches a complete end. Hence we feel that it is better than the second.

The exceptions are films that are based on books, e.g., The Lord of The Rings. Also there are some other notable exceptions:

Terminator II - Judgement Day and Alien 2. This is the best case when a sequel exceeded the first part. Both were directed by James Cameroon.

Star Wars V and VI - The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. To a lesser extent. Possibly because of enhanced graphics and advancement of computer technology. Actually SW-VI was quite silly for the entire Moss Eisley and Jabba's sequence.

Exactly. Films based on books are usually good.

The Godfather - Part II is also as good as the first because almost half of it is based on the main book.

I thoroughly hate the 2,3 part of the Matrix. Dont get me wrong, i still wont miss a chance to watch them.
Anyway, there are several loopholes in the first part too, just like SW series. but in this case they dont release comic books or games to cover them up periodically. If I were in the project (IF), I would have changed the concept in some places and introduced a much relevant version which confirms the "Judgement Day" theory from terminator series.

according to the movie , it is the matrix. we are all incubated and plugged into the matrix from the day we were born, the rebels who live outside in the real world are trying to rescue us from this dream world called the matrix.

i m not sure if this is what u wanted to know.

We'll never know. And for all intents and purposes this is the real world
for us, even if it is the Matrix. The fact that we are in a Matrix is
completely irrelevent until we realize we are in it. So till then
    enjoy the real world.

I believe the matrix trilogy actually corroborates either intentionally or unintentionally, the Hindu belief that the whole world is "Maya" or an illusion.

If it is indeed an illusion, what is the reality then? This question perhaps inspired all of India's great (or greatest) philosophers like Shankaracharya, Madhwacharya, Ramanujacharya, etc.

I watched the trilogy back-to-back-to-back again few days back... And I loved all 3 equally for 1st time...

Earlier I also believed that only 1st part was good... But now after watching all three movies without giving any break, I loved them all!
