Thumbs up Best mystery movie of all time? - with REVIEWS

Plz ADD Some Repo for me if You like the Reviews on this Thread

when it comes to mystery and thriller movies hollywood stands on top ... i have recently been downloading some gr8 mystery movies searching them from imdb and some of them are really superb ...

it is very difficult to mention one name as the best mystery movie of all time ... share ur favourites here with a review of your own or from some valid movie site

i would start this thread with my personal favourite

SE7EN -> Se7en (1995)

Directed by: David Fincher
Writer (WGA):Andrew Kevin Walker
Starring: Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey

Quote:
A film about two homicide detectives' desperate hunt for a serial killer who justifies his crimes as absolution for the world's ignorance of the Seven Deadly Sins. The movie takes us from the tortured remains of one victim to the next as the sociopathic "John Doe" sermonizes to Detectives Sommerset and Mills -- one sin at a time. The sin of Gluttony comes first and the murderer's terrible capacity is graphically demonstrated in the dark and subdued tones characteristic of film noir. The seasoned and cultured Sommerset researches the Seven Deadly Sins in an effort to understand the killer's modus operandi while green Detective Mills scoffs at his efforts to get inside the mind of a killer... Written by Mark Fleetwood

This thriller portrays the exploits of a deranged serial-killer. His twisted agenda involves choosing seven victims who represent egregious examples of transgressions of each of the Seven Deadly Sins. He then views himself as akin to the Sword of God, handing out horrific punishment to these sinners. Two cops, an experienced veteran of the streets who is about to retire and the ambitious young homicide detective hired to replace him, team up to capture the perpetrator of these gruesome killings. Unfortunately, they too become ensnared in his diabolical plan....
my comments: i never run out of adjectives for this movie

1)the best thing about this movie is that it will make u think for some while about it after u watch it.. my suggestion -> watch this movie with subtitles on ... otherwise it may become difficult to understand

2)One of the greatest and most twisted films of all time. A perfect demonstration of the darkest corners of the human psyche.

3)A superb first-rate edge of your seat phycological thriller. Grim, stylish, well written and expertly made

4)Incrediably shocking, mind-blowing and utterly unforgettable. A remarkable piece of filmmaking. This will chill your blood till you cant talk.

5) warning - some scenes may be really disturbing

this will also help get some good suggestions for mystery movie buffs ...

rock n rolla has a great ending!!

seven pounds, though a serious movie, will be worth every penny for its last 20 mins.the entire movie builds the platform for the climax to explode.

and the best of all times for me has to be "the prestige" and "the illusionist".do not see any reviews of these to save yourself from spoilers.the prestige is a must watch for any mystery movie buff!!

When you say all time, I got to go with "The Silence of the Lambs".
It was released in 1991 and is a classic. Much copied and spoofed
It was a fantastic movie with some great performances.

Anthony Hopkins is Dr. Hannibal Lecter who is a total
psychopath who is in prison for cutting and eating up
his patients.

Jodie Foster is Clarice Starling a young FBI agent on the
tracks of another serial killer called buffalo Bill who
kills his victims, skins them and makes clothes
out of their skins.

Clarice goes to Lecter in prison and talks to him to find out
clues about the serial killer who has kidnapped a senators
daughter now.

The interaction between Lecter and Clarice is very interesting.

In 1992 it won 5 Oscars. Best film, Best actor, Best actress,
Best DIrector and Best Screenplay.

So my personal favourite and vote for the best mystery movie
of all time is "The Silence of the Lambs"

the prestige and the illusionist ARE two of the greatest all time mystery movies.

i recommend it to everybody who has not seen it.

the prestige:
its about two magicians.initially both are friends, but the mistake of one leads to the death of the others wife while performing a trick.this makes them bitter rivals.both could kill to know the secrets of each others tricks and outshine each other.
hugh jackman finds a way by which he can perfom the greates trick ever known to mankind.just when he thinks he has got his revenge....[see the movie for the climax]

te illusionist:
a magician falls for the duchess of his town.the duchess is killed by her fiance, who would be the prince.but after her death, the magician can calll her spirit back by magic and make he talk and tell about her death.the would-be prince has this magician arrested and .....[see the movie for the rest]

I'll check out those two movies (prestige and illusionist).

I think we need to define what this thread means by mystery movie.
I gave my suggestion based on the interpretation of a psycholigical
thriller.

If it is something that is like a puzzle and the climax is a
total surprize and twist then I have a few suggestions.

Sixth sense
The Usual Suspects.
Planet of the Apes.
etc.

I haven't seen Hannibal rising. Hannibal and red dragon were also
very good but we end up comparing against the original and
they fall short because of that.

Hannibal Rising was crap...avoid it.

For me, Saw I was one of the better mystery movies of recent times.
It was really offbeat & totally unexpected.

Saw IV onwards, the series has become crap.

Among the old ones, Rear Window is really good.
It was remade a few years back as Disturbia.

Among Foreign Language in recent movies, The Orphanage was brilliant.

Hello all,

There should be distinction made between Horror and Mystery. Many (but not all) Horror movies will have some Mystery in it and vice versa.

But it is easy to classify the movie as Horror or Mystery.

For example, Rear Window has some horror. So does Dial M for Murder. But both are mystery movies in my humble opinion (people can differ on this). On the other hand Psycho is a horror movie.

Silence of the Lambs, IMHO, is a horror movie.

And saurav, (, I am smiling), if you invite opinions on what is the best movie in a particular genre, you will get as many different choices, as there are members.

that is the main purpose of this thread ... inviting various opinions ... and ... silence of the lambs definitely has a mystery factor involved in it .... who took the president's girl? where ? the behaviours of anthony hopkins etc bring in some mystery factor there .... i think the genre here should be "phychic thriller"

anyways i will come up with a good review today about a very recent movie i saw ... till then wait for it ...

Dragging means slow moving. And I didn't like that film except for the ending scene.

I got the crux of the movie. The killer is on the prowl based on the 7 sins. Anyway tastes differ.....
