Review:
The US Defence network has been tracking an object in space that they think is a meteor. Its trajectory is mapped as millions of miles away from Earth but one day it suddenly changes orbit and heading straight to Earth. It is going to hit New York. But as the object approaches the Earth, it slows down and lands softly in Central Park. It is a huge orb.

An alien steps out from the orb and is accidently shot by one the military/police persons. The creature is protected by a gigantic carbonite/semi-living robot like organism (see 3rd pic, post #1) who is able to restore some damage but not before some intense scaring of the people around. The alien from space has assumed a human form with the name Klaatu (Keanu Reeves). He wishes to address the leaders of the world at the UN.

The US government assembles a team of scientist and experts. One of them is Helen (Jeniffer Connoly), a widow living with her foster son, who teaches Astro-Biology in the local university. She forms a close bond with Klaatu and is nearest to him when he is shot. Klaatu says that the Earth is in danger and he has come to save the Earth. There are very few planets that support life and any such planet that is in eminent danger needs to be preserved. Man is destroying the planet and man must change.

The inflexible attitude of humans towards aliens is not helping. Klaatu is left with no choice but to destroy the human race. Only Helen and he son and their bond with Klaatu are the last hope for mankind.

I liked most of the movie but the end was very weak. But watch the movie. I am giving out too many details.
