Security hole in iPhone and iPod

Security consultant Piergiorgio Zambrini claims to have found some serious security holes in Apple's product line. According to Zambrini, the bug can crash iPhone and iPods.

The bug Zambrini found is in the audio portion of Apple's video format. He warned that a hacker can write a programme that incorporates the bug into a video file and trigger a crash whenever an iPhone attempts to run that file.

The bug is located in a shared code library that is used across most Apple operating systems. Zambrini claim that though the bug may not cause any permanent damage to the devices, but makes the iPhone or iPod crash and reboot.

In an interview to Forbes.com, he said that he discovered the flaw in July and alerted Apple. However, Apple till now has not responded back.

Incidentally, Zambrini is the Italian engineer best known for creating ZiPhone application, which unlocked the original iPhone that enabled customers to run the iPhone on a different carrier, as well as install non-approved applications.

Earlier also a few critical bugs have been reported in the Apple devices. Last month an Israeli researcher Aviv Raff reported two vulnerabilities in Apple newly launched 3G iPhone.

The first is the URL display flaw in the iPhone's Mail that could allow an attacker to send a message containing a malicious URL that looks legitimate. The second bug according to Raff was the iPhone's Mail application, which makes it easier for spammers to identify valid email accounts, and thus mark them for more spam.
