Default My entry into the Blu Ray club

Yesterday, I purchased the Sony BDP-S360 player and I am now going to say "Good Bye" to DVD slowly.

I purchased the blu ray player at local Fry's Superstore for $217.50 + Tax.

Madagascar 2 became the first Blu ray disc in my collection. Also planning few more BD purchases.

Congrates. Hope it will deliver best music and picture quality. I always prefer SONY for its class.

    Enjoy..

    Thanks.

There was a Samsung model (BD-1500). That was only $149.99 + tax. But I too thought that Sony would be better. Besides the Samsung model did not have Digital Coaxial out (see pic)

Some drawbacks about the Sony BDP-S360:
    - "Eject" function not on remote
    - Does not play Streaming Media from Netflix, YouTube, etc.

Both do not matter to me much.

Quality is excellent. I have heard (not tested) that Sony BDPs upscale DVDs better than others. But this could be a myth also.

My HT is old 5.1 system. So it will not be able to give the 7.1 surround. Also I do not have a Full HD TV as yet.

But I suppose that my 720p projector can yield better results now,

    Wow... Great buy!

Check out the Marketing Specification guys. Damn impressive!

J4X, here is the BDP-S360 Home Page for you. If you have not already visited, you may find it useful and interesting. Check out the Hot Topics on the model's home page which discuss the features and troubleshoot various issues.

I see that there is a firmware upgrade too under the Hot Topics. But that is required only while using BD-Live Technology of the player.

P.S. - Don't forget to register it online.

I don't live in the US. Just visiting for 4-5 weeks. Got a project to propose to Adobe and create a Solution Accelerator for Adobe LiveCycle ES product.

Sorry about that slight deviation, Let's get back on topic ;-)

Kix, did you checkout Costco, their selection might not be like Fry's
but they are cheaper. I mean BD discs.

I am waiting for it to fall below $100. I don't think watching
    Tamil movies requires blu-ray ;-)

    Check PM ;-)

Actually I had a question for you.

I am a big fan of older series like Star Trek, Law and Order and
Northern exposure. These were not telecast in HD right? So if they
come up with BD releases do they upsample it? So will that be
better than a DVD upscaled to 1080p?

I am asking because if I should buy the dvds now or wait for the BD?

As is the DVDs are very expensive. And if (and when) the Star Trek and others are released on BD, they will be quite expensive.

And you are right on the sampling and upscaling part. The original master was not hi-def and hence will be remastered. They will be better in HD but by how much is the question. Maybe one can buy an old Bond film (not too old but one of the Roger Moore ones) on BD to check this up.

BTW, Some Star Trek movies have been released on BD.

Sun tv serials and lousy Tamil vcds ;-)

VCD's? Really? Never touched that crap. Even VHS is better than VCD.

For serials, I will not say one word. To each his own.

I agree the pic quality is crap, but I myself have a collection of about 30
vcds of Tamil comedies of a few years back

Actually, in India, things could be excused because VHS itself was crap. Also very few people had VCRs and VCDs were much simpler to use because of the handling ease and playing capability on computer.

Since I was in US most of the time then (1990s), I sort of bypassed the VCD phase and directly went to DVD.

    Latest aquisitions (today):

    Too damn costly. (Damn! Groan!)

The latest three cost me $70. (more groans)

At least the quality will compensate a bit (weak smile).
