Default How important are megapixels for a camera

Mega pixels are an important part of photography, though there are other things like lighting, shake and focus which matter too.

Megapixels matter and have a lot to do with size of pictures. For a normal sized photograph 2 Megapixel is fine. If a camera has a low megapixel count and a large image is printed then the image will lack quality and most probably be blurred.

But having huge megapixel count on a camera isn’t too necessary , you can go according to your needs and spend less on a lower megapixeled camera.

A camera with 5 to 10 megapixel is very good if you are not a professional photographer. More megapixels don’t really mean better camera, infact huge megapixel images account for a lot of memory space too

Strictly speaking, from the amatuer point of view, any P&S camera above 6 mp is not adding any value.

even 6MP is a slight overkill. I have never taken pictures above 2MP resolution as they take far too much space, and lets face it, how many of us print these pictures

The only really really helpful feature i find in my camera is the image stabilization technique (or whatever you want to call it ).

PS: Went to the shop for getting a DSLR, saw tooooo many options there, came back empty handed and totally confused. Will need to read up about the different lenses...
