Everywhere you go, whether in India or abroad, chances are you will see/watch a 3D LED/LCD TV ad at least five times a day. People, and by people I mean the manufacturers, are making this as the next best thing to "must have" since sliced bread.
I am not so convinced.
3D films existed in 1930s. Avatar brought the 3D concept back in rage. And now everyone is jumping the 3D bandwagon. But to me nothing has really or fundamentally changed. Avatar and Alice in Wonderland has brought facier 3D glasses and that is about it. Instead of wearing cardboard glasses with red/green celophane films, we now wear somewhat futuristic looking goggles. And I was highly amused to see "Dolby Digital" stamped on the glasses. "Dolby Digital" indeed! "Dolby Digital" is a sound encoding technology. How does it end up in 3D glasses I fail to understand. What a unique way to make people to pay more money!!
But back on topic. As I said, 3D has not really evolved. It is basically the same twin camera shooting, projection with polarized light and watching with glasses.
If you are looking to buy a 3D TV please consider the implications very carefully. Look at it from every angle and it will be a very expensive proposition. You will also have to buy a new Blu-Ray player and maybe(?) a new receiver too. Plus, you will have to buy at least four pairs of 3D glasses. After spending so much money, there isn't a lot of content to watch either.
And I do not know about you but 3D becomes painful to me after an hour or so. I already wear shot-sight glasses. Wearing glasses over glasses is not my cup of tea. It is alright for a film or two, once in six months. But two glasses all the time to watch TV? Not my cup of tea.
So my recommendation is don't rush with your wallet to the TV showroom just yet.
