My personal experience is, any camera with more than 6 MP is more than adequate. Optical zoom is more important, higher, the better.

If you plan to purchase some other lenses in future, you can consider either Canon or Nikon, both offer lenses at affordable rate (Canon is more expensive compared to Nikon). If you wish to have only a SLR camera and do not intend to purchase any lenses in future, I'll suggest Sony. Sony lenses are harder to get and the charges is much more expensive.

+1 to this. I would recommend Canon highly (I am Nikon user).

Hi well in between nikkon and canon i would tell you to go for cannon, i bough canon A3100 for 6700 a couple of months back with 4GB card, 2 yrs canon warrant and it was good deal. It has image stablization, 4x optical zoom , face recognition,12MP

While features may not be much the quality of images is very good and i would recommend you go for this, else nikon is also good.

i think nikon S4000 should be well within your budget, if i remember the model number correctly.

Edit: You can also try to enquire about Canon IXUS130i i think it is also under 10k

well difficult if you are looking at canon and nikon at those prices but if you want that particular spec i think maybe fuji will have that. Else if you want to be on safe side go with a 4x optical zoom and buy canon. It is about quality and well the MP doesn't make that much difference but for regular use i think 4x zoom should be more than enough.

Even at 4x optical zoom, it is difficult to hold the camera steady for a frozen image. Certain cameras have digital image stabilization features but these are not as good as those available in DSLRs.

I have a Sony Cybershot DSC w-35 7.2 Mpix point and shoot.
I have many friends who have purchased Sony DSLRs as well.

All of them and I say the same thing.

    Go for Nikon or Canon.

Nikon and Canon are companies who had made maximum R&D in the field of cameras when we still used films.

Even today Canon and Nikon cams use re-chargeable easily replaceable AA or AAA cells. Sony uses proprietary batteries, and you cant ever get a replacement if one conks out.

Canon and Nikon also use memory cards which are easily available in the market. Sony cams use Memory Stick Pro Duo, which is damned costly, not easily available, and practically sux since there are a tonne of cheap duplicates available which don't work so great.

    Priority one Canon,
    Priority two Nikon,
    Priority three Sony.

    Cheers,
    -NWK

Nikon and Canon are the best known for digital cameras. I am also thinking to purchase but the SLR one. I am bit confuse which will be the best do that pixels do not break while zooming out.

I would recommend you to go for Canon Powershot cameras, they're really, have personally used them. In Digicams, any camera with 10 Mp is more than suffcient, higher megapizels just let u capture larger pictures, it has nothing to do with image quality. if the camera is expensive, it'll have a better image sensor and thus better image quality. Optical Zoom is another main thing to look out for.

If you can stretch your budget to around 14K, I would suggest you to go for Canon Powershot SX220 HS ... it is an AWESOME Camera, you'll just love it !!!!!

Else, if you HAVE TO stick to a budget of 10k, then check out other powershot cameras within that range. Hope I helped.

Talking Budget Bridge camera -Point and shoot with manual settings too.

Before you buy DSLR ,you can learn photography with manual controls in this budget camera 18X optical zoom,14 mega pix priced @ Rs 9325 at Flipkart.
You can buy a budget Tripod for (rs 800-1000)
You need a charger with 4 Ni-Mh rechargeable batteries (Rs 750) ( they will give only disposable alkaline)
camera will come with a bag and 4 GB SDHC class 4 memory . But you should get extra 8 Gb class 6 or 10 memory card to make videos.
It is a beauty and heavy (not compact and will not go in trouser pocket)
Canon and Nikon with 12X zoom will cost you 13k. I bought this for my adolescent/teenager kid to learn and break!
