Question Music System With HDMI/Optical IN

Can anybody suggest me with a good 5.1 or 7.1 music system available in India, which has either HDMI in or Optical in or both ?

Let us leave HDMI/Optical connectivity aside for the moment.

When we say "Music system", it is a system for pure music only and pure music is stereo (2-channel). You will never get surround sound from music CDs or such sources. 2.1, 5.1, 7.1, etc. are sound systems for the cinema. A movie soundtrack contains the extra tracks that produce surround sound.

We can find many systems in the store that are 5.1/7.1. Although these are meant for cinema audio, it does not mean that it cannot be used for music. However (as usual) there is a catch - or rather compromises in a 5.1/7.1 boombox.

In music, the sound varies in great ranges - right from 70 Hz to 17,000+ KHz. In movies, the main sound is usually dialogues. This is typically from 85 to 180 Hz for men, and from 165 to 255 Hz for females. And there is surround sound for which frequency varies a lot - but surround sound is not always omnipresent. Hence a movie system is generally geared for movie sounds.

When it comes to music, you need speakers that can deal with the full range (20 Hz to 20 KHz). So the 5.1/7.1 boombox may be more effective for bass but less for high-range treble. I have Bose speakers at home and they do not do justice to music.

It alll depends on how much of a purist you are.

Finally HDMI, Optical-in / Coaxial digital-in are for movies only. You can see them on DVD/Blu-Ray players and AV-Receivers mainly. If you wish to purchase a system with such inputs, I will recommend you to visit the Onkyo website and select a system of your choice. I will recommend the "HT-S5300 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver HTR-580" and this system should cost around Rs. 35,000/-.

    What is your budget?

    Check this article:

You can look at HTIB systems from Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha, etc. Or if your budget permits, you can aim higher as the aricle suggests.

You could look for the regularly advertised systems from Sony, Samsung, LG, etc. They are priced in that range. Visit their websites and do a sanctity check. Visit showrooms for a demo.

The word "compromise" is too generous in the context. Basically you get what you pay for.
