    Probably the DVD drive's laser lens has gone bad. You may be able to replace it. Have you tried repairs?

    You can attach speakers to an amplifier only. If there is some DVD player that has built-in amp, then you can use them provided the output impedence matches. There are very few such standalone DVD players with built-in AMP. Those which do are rarely sold alone but rather sold as a DVD HTIB package like your Sony.

    Your best option is to get the system repaired. You need not go to Sony only. Any reputed TV/Electronics mechanic will be able to do it.

    First things first ... check the speaker impedence. 400W or whatever alone does not mean anything. The speaker impedence can be 4Ω, 6Ω, 8Ω, or even 16Ω. The power equation is like this:

    W = Vē / R.

    So assuming that your the output voltage is 26 V RMS and speakers are of 4Ω then the speakers can deliver a power equivalent of 169W. The lower the speaker impedence, the higher the rated output.

    Cheap music systems often reduce the output impedence to inflate the power numbers.

    Standard/retputed AV equipment manufacturers do not use this cheap trick. They use RMS rating (as against PMPO) and the amps are rated for speakers having impedence of 6Ω/8Ω. This is the audio industry standard.

    Hence speakers dedicated for HTIB such as Sony's, LG's, Samsung's of the world may not work with any other AV amp.

    ----

    Now assuming that your speakers are 8Ω, you can then use them with another system. You will need:

    a) A DVD player: The cheapest one will cost you Rs. 3000 or there about.
    b) You will also need a 5.1 AVR. The cheapest one will cost you close to Rs. 20K.

    This will be way beyond your current budget. My suggestions are as follows:

    Option 1) Get the system repaired from non-dealers. Dealers are not interested in repairs. They take a short cut by replacing the entire circuit board. Small repair shops on the other hand will look at the circuit and look for faulty components and then repair them. From what appears to me is that there is a simple problem somewhere. Does the system able to play audio CDs? It is unlikely that the system board has gone faulty unless there was a power surge or some issue like that.

    Option 2) Junk the speakers. Get another HTIB from Sony/Samsung/LG/Philips that will cost Rs. 15K or less.
