Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. to get into Internet Protocol TV services market
Indian government owned telecom company MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd.) has said that they would soon start offering Internet Protocol TV services (IPTV) under the TriBand name.
The company is planning to start testing this new technology in New Delhi and Mumbai cities.
MTNL has plans to get into collaborations with broadcasters such as STAR TV, Prasar Bharati, Zee TV, Sony Entertainment and others for this service.
Interestingly, the Indian government has yet to establish rules and policies for IPTV technology. However, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has floated a consultation paper and proposed an amendment to the country’s Cable TV Act to govern it.
MTNL is not the only telecom player to consider making an entry into this market. Operators of Airtel branded telecom services Bharti is already testing it out in the city of Gurgaon.
