Thread: India warned to boost internet

A research conducted by Vodafone (UK) has warned India to boost its internet penetration by manifold. According to the conclusion formed as a result of the research "very low" penetration of internet would be a drag on the country's global competitiveness. According to them India in spite of being Asia's third largest economy lags behind in internet penetration with just 5% of the country enjoying internet. They have also derived conclusions such as Restricted internet access lags a booming mobile phone market, which now numbers about 350m users.

I think I saw another post here sometime ago (possibly by Rameshjee) that indicated that India has fairly large internet reach, at least in the Dial-up variety.
As regards internet access from mobile, well it does not really add much to the "global competitiveness" of the country, it only adds to the profit margins of the Mobile Co. like the one conducting this study.
So it could be said that the "warning" has a component of bias arising from commercial interest.
