Government considering cell phone users directory
The Indian government is once again giving a serious thought to the proposal of getting out a directory of mobile phone users on the similar likes as telephone directories for landline users in the country.
DoT Secretary J S Sarma said at a conference organized by ASSOCHAM on this proposal: “No definite proposal has been finalized but the telecom ministry is seriously considering the proposal of creating a directory of at least post-paid mobile subscribers.”
He added that if the proposal is passed by the government, each mobile service provider would be told to come out with a directory of users on their network. He also ensured that they would be taking enough security measures to prevent any lapses.
However, this is currently just a proposal and nothing is confirmed for now. Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran has invited suggestions from the telecom and mobile service providers on this initiative.
