Amidst much controversy and lot of speculation, A Raja will take charge as the new TelecomMinister again and while many GSM players may feel a little apprehensive, he has his priorities clearly worked out. Despite many questioning his credentials Raja is determined to complete his unfinished agenda.
“ We expect to complete 3G auctions in two months time,” he said. But, what could be more exciting for existing mobile users is Raja's aim to bring down call rates drastically.
“I am aiming for local call rates to fall at 10 paise per min and STD rates to 25 paise per min,” the minister said.
However, even as operators are a little wary of such populist announcements, they hope Raja will turn a new leaf and chart a clear path for the sector's growth.
Anil Sardana, MD of Tata Teleservices, said, 'It’s not important whether the Telecom Ministry has a new or old face but there should be a new phase in the telecom policy.”
Meanwhile, On being asked about differences with the TRAI in spectrum allocation, Raja said, 'If there are any differences in spectrum allocation than what TRAI has recommended, I will take any decision only after consulting them.”
Now, with key issues to be sorted out and thousands of crores of government revenue riding on 3G auctions, it’s not only the operators but also the Prime Minister himself who may be watching the telecom sector closely.
