Default Raja’s agenda: Local call at 10 paise, STD at 25

Amidst much controversy and lot of speculation, A Raja will take charge as the new TelecomMinister again and while many GSM players may feel a little apprehensive, he has his priorities clearly worked out. Despite many questioning his credentials Raja is determined to complete his unfinished agenda.

“ We expect to complete 3G auctions in two months time,” he said. But, what could be more exciting for existing mobile users is Raja's aim to bring down call rates drastically.

“I am aiming for local call rates to fall at 10 paise per min and STD rates to 25 paise per min,” the minister said.

However, even as operators are a little wary of such populist announcements, they hope Raja will turn a new leaf and chart a clear path for the sector's growth.

Anil Sardana, MD of Tata Teleservices, said, 'It’s not important whether the Telecom Ministry has a new or old face but there should be a new phase in the telecom policy.”

Meanwhile, On being asked about differences with the TRAI in spectrum allocation, Raja said, 'If there are any differences in spectrum allocation than what TRAI has recommended, I will take any decision only after consulting them.”

Now, with key issues to be sorted out and thousands of crores of government revenue riding on 3G auctions, it’s not only the operators but also the Prime Minister himself who may be watching the telecom sector closely.

I hope he has similar plans for Broadband. Let us wait and see.

I prefer rather than making calls cheaper, let the rates be the same & the quality of the technology should be improved.

No say 50ps for 1 min & we talk only 30 sec rest all just saying hello hello (as in ad) now we wont call back if its absolutely necessary because of cost later this hello hello problem will remain the same but we will call more saying its cheaper now and still more the traffic gets jammed and money will be lost.

I would be more happy to see cheaper high speed unlimited broadband connections rather than cheaper call rates.

The problem is lowering broadband charges wont be a popular measure. Broadband has nothing to do with people's life style (expect a few, that too mostly in cities) whereas land line charges modification will be greeted with enthusiasm amongst public.

    I was also serious.
CDMA always will get you better voice clarity than GSM at the same price. its inherrent in the technology. of course provided you don't take the crappy 700/- handset offered by the CDMA operators and invest the same amount for a good CDMA handset as you you do for a GSM one.
