Lightbulb Avoid Repost - How to Search Jokes before posting

Recently, instances of old jokes reposting has increased. Noone reposts a joke intentionally.

Most of us post jokes from different sources from the internet and from forwarded mails. Its not always possible to search whether a joke has been posted earlier or not. The search function of Vbulletin isnt that good. Also, the fact that different people give different titles to a joke, makes it even more difficult to find a joke. Probably I have been the one who posts maximum duplicate jokes. I will do it myself from now on and also suggest members to search for jokes on the forum before posting in the following way:

Copy a long sentence or para from the joke and search it on google with site:indiabroadband.net prefixed to it. This gives good results. No point in searching with Jokes titles coz different people use different titles for a joke.

Ex: Suppose i want to post this joke:

    Letter To God...

A little boy wanted Rs.50 very badly and prayed for weeks, but nothing happened. Finally he decided to write God a letter requesting the Rs.50.

When the postal authorities received the letter addressed to God, INDIA, they decided to forward it to the President of the India as a joke. The President was so amused, that he instructed his secretary to send the little boy Rs.20.

The President thought this would appear to be a lot of money (Rs.50) to a little boy,and he did not want to spoil the kid.

The little boy was delighted with Rs.20, and decided to write a thank you note to God, which read:

"Dear God: Thank you very much for sending the money. However, I noticed that you sent it through the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, and those donkeys deducted Rs.30 as tax .. "
    http://www.indiabroadband.net/jokes-...etter-god.html

I will Select a long line/para from the joke: "A little boy wanted Rs.50 very badly and prayed for weeks, but nothing happened. Finally he decided to write God a letter requesting the Rs.50."

Now I will prefix "site:indiabroadband.net" to it and search on google.

So the final search string becomes site:indiabroadband.net A little boy wanted Rs.50 very badly and prayed for weeks, but nothing happened. Finally he decided to write God a letter requesting the Rs.50.

If this joke is already posted in the forum, it will be found by google. Results of only IBF will be shown.

See what result the above search yielded:

I hope this will reduce the number of reposts.

hey hey man easy.....this is jokes section.....i wont be careful here if i need to post a joke......i mean i can't be that much serious just to post the joke

anyways.....here is my idea.....just disable the post count in jokes section. this will be pretty effective. so we need not to be too cautious abt posting jokes & reposts.......

Actually the forum search also works pretty well though not as good as Google. The only issue with Google search is that Google may not have indexed the latest posts.

    Making this thread sticky.

Forum search is good with short strings like the thread title. As I mentioned, the same joke may be available with different titles at different sources. Honestly, even after searching using the forum search, i ended up posting a duplicate jokes a few times.

The only issue with Google search is that Google may not have indexed the latest posts.
Jokes reposting is an issue with older posts only. Latest jokes dont get repeated they can be found on the first or second page of the jokes section itself.

While using the Google Custom Search saurav has referred to, it searches the whole of the forum (including all the pages that were not indexed till that time). And that is the main point in preferring Google Custom Search over any other searches.

P.S: I have been using this only for searching the forum. vBulletin Search facility is not pretty accurate, or precise. But it can help when you can specify some details of the post/thread you are searching for, say, a post by the user 'ABC' in a specific forum (section), say 'Jokes and Humor'.

It was a joke which conveyed that what if a user post a delibrately repeat a joke only to irritate & also what if a jokes is a part of series.

The SEARCH box in forum page is very useful, and limits to previous
    threads on given subject.

For instance just type WA3002-g4 you get previous threads.
Type WA3002-g4 essbebe,: get all threads/posts in which
    I have mode some contribution.

It helps the forum and users, if @moderator changes the thread title
to start with the modem/router name and then "blah blah"
WA3002-g4 "help" or "urgent" "not working" is
preferable to Help! urgent . SOS
and in the thread the modem/router is mentioned.

Spam posts will not get listed in Search engines,
and even if listed will not appear in first three pages.

Usually the First page lists threads/posts most often referred to
( or paid for as Advertisement )
I found IBF mostly listed in the first page itself. ( Google )

Try the key words from this thread and check in google
first page :Last post listed as Aug 2009. key word: avoid repost
But unlikely any one will use this term in searching !
