I have a Sony Vaio laptop that I bought new about a year ago. If it stays plugged in all the time will it damage the battery and cause it to not last as long when battery power is used?

yes if you keep it pugged in power all the time then it will affect battery life but you really need not to worry about it coz it will not affect badly and your battery will work fine for atleast 24-36 months in this condition too. After that you may need to replace battery and in any case normal working life of battery is about 24-36 months only so you can use it without any worries :
Most of the laptop users use laptop like this only
There are battery optimizer functions available. Use them from the power manager in control panel.
To increase battery life... U should not plug it "On" all the time... As a highly charged lithium battery living in Hot environment of your Laptop will degrade rapidly... And hence the back-up time of battery will reduce faster...
- Unplug the charger as soon as your laptop's battery is 100% charge...
- Charge it again when its near 10% remaining...
- If you are not going to use your laptop for few days/months then charge the battery to 40% and forget about it...
- If you have a UPS at home, you can keep your battery out of laptop and directly connect laptop to UPS and use laptop like a desktop... This helps especially if you've to download a big file and keep the laptop on for hours...
Thanks guys! Those are some great ideas. I mainly use it plugged in and not on battery power.
