Default Any one who is using Netbooks here ?

Recently I read a post on Netbooks and tested a few notebooks.

If you guys would like to know more please check out:

I liked the Acer Netbook the most.

if your need is mainly browsing / using server based software like ERP packages / limited office applications go for a netbook
but if u need more heavy duty processing, go for a laptop.

yaa ... actually the dilemma is based upon time and money ... i am willing to buy a high end laptop but wont be able to afford one at this moment ... so am doing a bit of research ... for buying a laptop i will have to wait for another 2-3 months ...

yes ... thats the main problem ... size matters afterall ...

thats why i am also keen on waiting for a few months and then buy a laptop ...

well if ur on the go, netbooks are really good. I guess they are the best option for students. There are some 10" netbooks too. Chk those if u find the 8.9" screen too small.

if it was only for size i would prefer small screen laptops rather than netbooks ... like the dell inspiron mini recently introduced

    im having a lenovo s10.....1.6 atom--1gig 667mhz ram(upgradable to 2 gigs)--160gig hdd 5400rpm--10.2" 1024x600 res screen--3 cell battery that lasts a bit more than 2 hours......and loving it.....

i mostly use it to surf the net on wifi in my house and other simple stuff (simple for for the computer) like working on word documents and excel spreadsheets.....

its great for such usage.....when u need only the internet or some low horsepower stuff like working on word, excel, tally, etc......not to mention that it's very very portable....10" and just over a kilo.......

of course, though it can never replace my powerful desktop......its perfect for times when i dont need the capacity of playing crysis....like when just surfing on the net,etc.....plus using a netbook at such times saves a few hundred watts too.....

    in my opinion,
unless u can spend a lot and if u dont plan to use heavy apps on the laptop and dont need an optical drive......a netbook is perfect for all other stuff......im running xp on it.....and never it feels "slow" as such.....having enough power for most apps.....considering that u dont have unrealistic expectations....

barring intensive tasks like gaming or audio/video conversion/editing, graphics designing,etc....and the occasional moment when u need to pop in a cd/dvd.....it makes a great secondary computer.......though i wudnt recommend it for use as a primary computer......coz the processor and graphics really really suck.....and absence of an optical drive is a handicap for using as a primary pc......

overall.....if you're looking for a cheap, portable laptop or secondary computer.....which wont be used for running demanding apps or games, and have another comp, whose optical drive can be shared, or a usb dvd/cd drive.....a netbook is perfect.....

many netbooks r available here.....in india....
asus, acer, lenovo, hp, samsung, sony....n i think dell n lg too.....n also zenith...iball....lol!!!

of these, as far as i know, except acer, all others r available in 9 and 10 inch models.....and seriously.....i wouldnt recommend a 9 incher....it gets way too small.....10 inch is the best bargain......

all r priced between 20k to 30k....with acer aspire one being the cheapest, starting from 16k-17k for the lowest model upto 20k for 1g ram-160g hdd.....lenovo s10 with the specs i mentioned above is priced around 23k now.....(id bought it at 25k 3 months ago).....asus 1000h and samsung nc10 with 1g ram-160g hdd config are around 26-27k, hp mini also is cheap at around 20k-21k but has a slower, smaller 60g hdd......and as usual sony vaio p is outrageously priced at 45k something....of course its a lot smaller.....

from what i know....samsung and asus 10" come with 6 cell batteries n the others with 3-cell.....

by the way....typed this on my lenovo s10 itself....

    Unhappy

    well i chose the lenovo s10 coz.....firstly..... it had a 10-inch screen.....

and when i bought mine, samsung's nc10 had not been released.....it's available now... the trackpad size on the samsung is awfully small......though it has a full size keyboard.....and 6-cell batt....

the hp mini was available, cheaper, and had a full size keyboard.....but it used a smaller 1.8" 60gig 4200rpm hdd....whereas in mine, i have a 2.5" 160gig 5400rpm hdd....and 2.5" hdds are common and cheap to upgrade.....

asus 1000h was a real option.....but it costed 2-3k more.....and had the advantage of a 6-cell batt and a a/b/g/draft-n wifi adapter....(lenovo,acer,hp dont have the "draft-n"....not sure abt others)....by the way....the 1000h doesnt look even half as good as the lenovo.....is bulkier and heavier too.....

acer's aspire one was out of the question as it had a 9-inch option...n yea....it doesnt have bluetooth....though it had a wide variety of configs....like 512/1g ram....120-160 hdd....linux-win xp....and the 1-inch does make a real huge difference.....dell too was 9-inch only.....and used only a small capacity ssd....by the way....i dunno if its sold in india.....i suppose it must be tho.....

sony's vaio p wasnt launched back then....though id never even have considered it coz of the unjustified price, plus the smaller screen and no touchpad....though its quite smaller and lighter than the others.....but the price is impossible to digest anyway.....

never considered stuff like zenith, iball as options....

so considering the advantages of the s10.....

expresscard-34 slot which none of the others have......though i dont think ill ever use it....but its always better to have one if u can...hehe....

    the 10 inch screen as i mentioned above.....and it's led-backlit.....

licensed windows xp home ulcpc edition
[p.s.: it runs mac osx too-only lan and sleep dont work...no patch yet]

    bluetooth (widcomm drivers)
    good wifi reception
    10/100 lan
    [wifi and lan are broadcom]

1.3mp webcam.....though the webcam sucks in low light conditions......works ok in good light

speakers ideally placed at the front instead of bottom

ram and hdd are easily upgradably via upgrade slots in the bottom like normal laptops.....as far as i know.....other netbooks have to be opened fully-voiding the warranty-and dissecting it completely....which, most people would refrain from.....the s10's upgrade slots are convenient and just like standard laptops.....such that any layman can open and upgrade....

2.5" standard sata hdd with AHCI drivers preinstalled in xp - 160 gigs - 5400rpm which can be upgraded easily.....in speed and capacity too....ssd can be used too....

1 gig 667mhz ram.....which can be upgraded to a max of 2 gigs.....actually 512 is soldered onto the mobo.....and a 512 stick is at the bottom slot....where u can add upto 2 gigs......but the total usable ram is 2 gig only due to a limitation of the 945 chipset....no netbooks can use more than 2.....

gma950 graphics sharing upto 128mb of ram....usually 8mb only is allocated....but while gaming the shared mem increases(whatever old games one can play on it)

one key recovery software (toned down version of cyberlink recovery software)-makes recovery discs via usb dvd/cd drive or on the hdd itself-can be used in case of an os crash-its good for ppl who arent so well versed with os reinstalls, etc.

norton internet security suite 2008 90 day trial.....with boot time scan using one key recovery software.....

and i had a sticker and leaflet inside with a one year free subscription for k-7 antivirus....not sure if its standard....

the trackpad is decent in size-and has buttons at the bottom and not the sides like some others.....has multitouch recognition too.....uses synaptics drivers.....

intel speedsptep implementation is quite good with lenovo's own energy management software

last but not the least......it looks sleek n sexy.....mine's ruby red....with white on the insides.....and i love the two tone colour combo.....white,black,blue,pink also available....

and yeah....lenovo being a well established brand in india....servicing wont be a problem.....plus lenovo is known to make very durable, and sturdy and good
    comps.....

    and the few minuses.....

only 2 usb ports instead of 3 on all others-one is replaced by the expresscard 34 slot

memory cards stick out when inserted....making it risky to keep a card inside when carrying in a bag or so.....

erratic fan behaviour......fan suddenly fires up and turns off at the same moment....withing 2-3 seconds....though this has been rectified to a large extent by the latest bios update.....fan makes little but quite audible sound when on full load...

some reviews say it becomes hot.....well.....i never felt so, its decent on the lap, not "hot" as such....but i suppose others may be cooler....

once in a while, erratic screen backlight behaviour too....sometimes the screen brightness jus turns up for no reason....though it doesnt happen quite often, feels quite irritating when it does....

i havent been able to get pc suite to connect with my nokia 5700xm yet....though i think its just a driver issue....otherwise bluetooth module has great speeds....reaches 130kbps when phone's placed near the touchpad....

fn and ctrl keys r interchanged and take some time to get used to.....though its the same case on all netbooks....with some even having right shift and up arrow exchanged

3 cell battery......which can be upgraded to 6-cell....though the bigger batt sticks out....

[P.S. s9 with 80 gig hdd/512 ram/9 inch screen/linux is also available, asus 900 series with diff configs in 9 inches also exist, though i wont recommend a 9-incher,the difference isnt much, with both 9 and 10 having same designs but diff configs and those who dont mind the screen size and want cheaper n smaller ones can definitely consider 'em]

and by the way.....netbooks with dual core atom cpu, new chipsets and nvidia graphics, etc are gonna debut soon.....

feel free to ask me anything related to netbooks.....researched quite a bit on 'em when i was gonna buy mine.....i can help a lot....lol.........

    [[hope reading this wasnt "pakau"]]
