You cannot directly connect them to each other. What you need (at the minimum) is an ethernet hub.

NO you cannot connect with that cable, that cable is for using through a Hub,
But if you want to connect without using a hub then go to nearest computer hardware shop & get a new cable but dont forget them to say that you are using it to connect two computers directly not through hub....(technically 8th & 16th wire in the cable will be exchanged)

you can connect 2 comps or laptops without a HUB...but you cant use normal ethernet cable(one from bsnl)..u need CROSS-WIRE cable to do it..just use the cable to directly connect

If you want to connect only those two machine yes you can easily do it using your network cable provided you have network slots in both machines. But if you are looking to connect both your machines to the modem then either an ethernet hub would or like mahellraiser has told, an crosswire should be fine.

In normal ethernet cable all the wire's in it are straight ie if you hold both the ends and compare both are exactly the same (the colour code)

In cross wire cable if you compare the 8th & the 16th wires are interchanged because the ports in the system are reserved for incoming & outgoing so its interchanged to exchange the network packets

arunkumarnk you dont worry about the name of the cable just go to the store and tell them to give a network cable to connect 2 pc's directly... not through hub ... they will give you ... just to confirm its cross cable you check the colour on the wire's (check my last page post)

not need to buy any more cable if your dsl modem has usb connectivity.
Now a days all modems are usb capable ...
If it has usb connectivity and that cable with you then,
connect Ethernet cable (from modem) to your pc and usb cable (from modem) to your lap topn and install modems usb driver.
now your two systems is connected
