    oh!

some general points to be considered before buying a secondhand laptop are

    1. Check the configuration of hardware...RAM, Processor, Speed. This should atleast meet today's standard.
    2. Googled the laptop model and check if it is a failure one.
    3. Check whether the laptop supports your need atleast for 2/3 years, sothat you dont need to invest again.
    4. More important thing is findout why he is selling his laptop. There might be some hidden issues.

It depends on the age of laptop. But the above stated functions depend mainly on connection speed than hardware configuration. If you believe your friend and the configuration is all right, you can go ahead.

256 MB of RAM will be nice at this stage. Laptops are a bit costly when it comes to maintenance. So ask the age and configuration so that we can give you a better idea. Also ask your friend's opinion about its performance.

If I am not mistaken laptops are available for 30,000. If you can manage a personal or bank loan, I suggest try a brand new one.

It seems a bit old. P3 847 Mhz can be used without any problem for browsing net and meeting your requirements. I am not sure how torrent clients will respond if you intend to download movies using torrents. If you want to download big files, you may need download managers. Try installing these software in the laptop and check how they respond. On the safer side, download a movie and watch at your friend's. If it works, go ahead.

Rs. 9000 is really a small price for laptop. But if you try to replace any of the hardware, it will be costly as the model is old. The components may not be available and will be costly. Your purchase is profitable as long as you do not need to meet a maintenance personal.

    Hope this helped.

Without battery backup then no portability!! For Rs 5000/- Its almost reasonable.

Please do not take this as an advice. But with such a small budget, it won't be easy to find a good laptop, even if it is second hand. Since you were ready to buy a laptop without backup, I believe portability is not an issue for you. For browsing and movies, it will be best to opt for a desktop. You can buy a 1 year old desktop with a descent configuration for Rs. 12,000. During maintenance, laptops may prove expensive.

Laptops are good for those who travel and need to take the data with them. After you buy a laptop after first 2 weeks, the enthusiasm dies and it is just like another computer. If you buy a computer/laptop from a far away place, if any repair or damage happens, you won't be able to reclaim your money.

I still think you are not clear with your requirements ....

Do you want portability ? (Battery Backup)

If the answer is no , there is no point in going for a laptop .... u can go in for an excellent desktop (new) at that price ... speaking relative to a laptop

well said ShAdOwCoN, laptop is only essential when it comes to portability. for the normal stuff the desktop(2nd or new) is always good choice.....
