Which OS are you using...? Try restoring it to the best point.

There's probably an application which freezes the explorer shell on startup. Once you manage to boot up proper, go to START>>RUN and type in msconfig and hit Enter. In the System Configuration Utility window that opens, select Diagnostic Startup... and then click on Apply and then OK and if it prompts you to restart your computer, do so.

If your computer boots up proper this time it'd mean one of those programs in the STARTUP tab of the System Config Utility "could be" causing the issue. So do an msconfig once again and go to the STARTUP tab and put a checkmark against the first item in the list and Apply/Ok and reboot. Repeat this step by adding a check on the next item after each proper bootup and you could find out which of those apps is actually cuasing the problem.

If the aforementioned steps don't work, and if you think that it's getting really annoying, you could boot your pc from a boot disk and go to a DOS prompt and type - format c: hah!

When you say minimized the number of applications, my understanding is you have not tried the diagnostic mode. So it could very well be any one of those which you thought safe to leave checked. Otherwise there could be a hell lotta causes. I've seen such issues caused by faulty processors, power supply etc. But I'd suggest you check the OS and software first. sfc /scannow might be a good thing to do next and you'd probably need the XP install CD.

Well if you could try diagnostic mode for once... if you decide to leave your antivirus checked - that still is not diagnostic mode and any more advise seems pointless. Maybe other users of the forum might know of something better you could try. Good luck
