    Default Basic Laptop

Im looking for a basic laptop, so that when I'm traveling I can check my mails and check work things! I dont want something too cheap, but something which is good quality and last for some time.

Hard drive should be at least 160GB

I don't want too excessive in price or something too cheap

    please tell your budget.

Have a look at the HP DV2 series laptop. Its really small and light, priced around Rs35,000 incl tax, but that was around 4 months back could be cheaper now. Its configuration is not the greatest , but then you dont need high end stuff.

Even the cheap laptops work for a long time, as long as you take good care of the laptop and keep it in safe conditions. You can probably get yourself a very nice laptop trhough HP for around $400-500 and maybe a little less if you find one that they are having on sale. I would highly recommend getting accidental damage so it can be replaced if something goes wrong, that way you at least have a back up.

Why don't you consider a netbook instead of a laptop?

    a) Netbooks are nearly half the price
    b) They are small and very light - can even fit into a large shoulder purse
    c) They can have all the basic applications

How does a netbook actually differ from a laptop?

Hp seems to be a popular brand for laptops, as long as its reliable, I mean I don't want something which will get any problems 5mths down the line!!

Preeti_20, netbooks cannot match the performance of a typical notebook because they are fairly limited on the specs that can be used due to their size. For instance the processor and the amount of ram that can be used. Also all netbooks lack an optical drive which is used to install software from a CD and also to watch DVDs. Those are the two major differences between a netbook and notebook.

As stated in the previous post, a Netbook doesn't have a CD/DVD Drive. Also, the Processor is not powerful. Most of the Netbooks available in India have Intel Atom Processor.

Here is a Netbook from Sony VAIO which comes with the Windows 7 Starter 32-bit OS- VPCW125AG.

    Good:

    Weight- 1.19 KG
    Hard Drive- 250 GB SATA

    Bad:

Bundled Battery- up to 2 hours.

Bottomline- If anyone wanna have this Netbook, consider interchanging the bundled Battery with a large capacity Battery at the time of purchase. It may cost you 3K more but the Battery life as stated in the specs is 5.5 hours.

They have issues when playing true HD movies. It lags in sound as CPU and RAM is not that high end.

Sony VAIO's latest offering in Netbooks is its X series Netbooks. They are supersexy. You must have watched the Kareena Kapoor ad where she puts it in her Jeans back pocket.

    VPCX117LG/B

    Good-

    • Incredibly light (760 gms.) and sleek.
    • Bright, colorful LED-backlit screen
    • Although the Hard Drive is only 128 GB but it's based on the latest SSD technology which is faster than the normal SATA Hard Drives.
    • Bundled with Windows 7 Professional 32-bit which is a thumbs-up for a Netbook.
    • Standard Battery life is up to 6.5 hours. If you opt for the large capacity Battery, you can enjoy a good 14 hours of backup.
    • Windows XP Professional install Disc is shipped for free.

    Bad-
Price which is Rs. 84,990 /-.

Yes, Dell is obviously a neat choice. But would you please suggest her some models? As being on the forum and tech enthusiast, I guess she already has a fair idea about brand value. All she wants to know in this thread is few models from different brands, so that she can make a final call.

Preeti requires a basic latop and mainly for checking mails, surfing the internet, etc. It is with this background that I suggested a netbook.

The netbook is very convenient because of the size (most netbooks are less than a 1 kg). Obviously at half the price, one cannot expect the performance as of that of a full spec laptop.

Netbooks are not a good option. They are seriously underpowered and i have no idea how the experience of Windows 7 on a netbook be. Dell inspiron is again not a very good option as it is far too heavy to be called portable. It is strongly suggested that you go for a small laptop, with a screen size of 12" or 13".
    Have a look at this:

    Laptop Guide

What i mean is, just go for something that is small and light and is not a netbook.

    Edit: Get this :
    11.6" Dell
Will probable be a little costly, but i feel its a better option than a netbook.

Dell 11z is a good Notebook. However, it can't be customized by Indian customers online yet. They have to purchase it as it's imported from the resellers in India. Hence, not a cost-effective option.
