    Default Laptop vs Netbook

Out of laptop and netbook which is better and why?

How would you compare the two and what reason would you give for your dislikes and likes of each?

Netbooks are more portable and versatile because they can fit in a purse, small backpack, etc. While a Notebook tends to be quite a bit larger and needs extra storage space in order to carry it. One of the downsides of using a netbook is it lacks a optical drive so you cannot run or play any sort of CDs or DVDs but other than that and the performance side of the notebook they are about the same.

Ummm ... u gotta be kidding me.

    okay here goes..

Netbooks use Intel Atom processors. The Atom is clocked at 1.6GHz / 1.66Ghz for the N280. This is the processor which is most commonly used. There is also the Z series but that is slower at 1.3GHz. The performance of an Atom processor can be roughly compared to a P4 at similar clock speeds.

Any modern day LAPTOP based on a core 2 duo processor wiull blow away the Atom. Even a celeron "CULV" based laptop will be atleast twice as powerful as a netbook.

Netbooks have either GMA500 or the archaic intel 9series graphic chip. This chip is insufficient to run even 720p videos smoothely and you can NOT expect to run any game since maybe 2002 :P

A netbook is good enough for web browsing , office use. Though you must not expect to play Flash video (youtube) at high quality.

So performance wise , there is no competition between netbooks and laptops. Laptops win hands down. Where the Netbook does win is portability and battery life. Any netbook will deliver atleast 3-4 hours of battery life with some going right upto 10hours. With the upcoming "Pineview" N450 processors , 10hour battery lives will become the standard.

Hope that answers your question Preeti.

Tyler , please refrain from posting wrong information. A person should be completely aware about what they are buying rather than suffering from buyers remorse later on.

Do you have any benchmarks supporting the claim of the ULV processors being 2x faster than an Atom ??

I would agree 100% with the rest

Actually I prefer more on a laptop..its complete.. besides its like a desktop too with all the components intact while a net book have no enough memory and have to need an outer cd rom and harddisk although its light compare to a laptop but I would like laptop more...

Netbook is ideally suited to the light user.

While it is indeed true that netbooks lack power and some attachments such as a DVD drive, how many times in a year does one require a DVD drive from the computer? Maybe to install some software. But a branded netbook will be sold with all required software pre-installed.

The only major drawback I see with a netbook is the small screen size. This means plenty of scrolling when surfing/reviewing.

All the guys here who are singing huge praises for the laptop and saying that netbook is a junk basically do not know what they are saying. They are techies are heavy users and of course the netbook cannot be their tool.

But take it from me. I am also a hardcore techie. I may also never buy a netbook because it may not suit my requirements. But that does not mean that the netbook is useless.

If all you need to do are the following:
    • Surf the internet
    • Check email
    • Download and watch stuff
    • Text and/or video chats
    • Look at MS-Office documents and do some minor edits
    • any other light task
then netbook is the best tool.
    • It is extremely light
    • It is extremely portable
    • It is versatile
    • And best of all, it is HALF the price of the laptop
People here are comparing a fully loaded sedan with a scooter/m-cycle.

Remember, quality is conformance to requirements. A Pierre Cardin leather brief case with brass combination locks is indeed an epitome for quality. But you cannot use it to carry groceries. To run to a corner store to buy medicine, a two wheeler is better suited than your Toyota Prado (unless of course you prefer to walk and get exercise).

So decide what your requirements are. And then choose.

depends on your use, if you just want to do basic work . check mails, surf and some word processing then netbooks would do just fine but if you want some more computing power then you will have to go with laptops.
