Default Info about Core i Series for Laptop

    Hi Guyz,

I am planning to buy a new laptop. This one will be my first laptop.
In Dell I am getting T6600 along with Core i3 and Core i5. I am bit confused here.

Please explain me which one of above 3 better in terms of Power Consumption, speed and heating.
One more thing is there like "Intel® Core™ i5-520M Processor (2.4GHz, 4 Threads, turbo boost up to 2.93GHz, 3M cache)"

Here what "turbo boost up" actually means? Is it anything like over clocking.?

    Thanks
    Suman

Turbo boost up is not overclocking. Your frequency will increase only under certain conditions.
    1. Some cores in a low state. C3 or C6. Only cores which are high state C1 or C 0 their frequency are increased.
    2.Having low temperature.
    3.Using low power.
OS will not report increase frequency. In overclocking OS report increase frequency & increased frequency is permanent. But in both OS use increased frequency.
I think a core i3 will use less power & cooler than all ( core i 5 might also be cooler)but don't have many things of core i5 or core i 7 like hyper threading & turbo boost. So go for core i 5 as it will consume less power than t6600 but might more or less than core i3 ( second part i am not sure about first part i am damn sure).
History is on the move,my friends. Those who cannot keep up will be left behind, to watch from distance. And those who stand in its way will not watch at all.

just go for the one that is cheaper....performance difference is not that much. I had used a laptop with a core i7m and it was not that great...

anyways, what luke said is correct, turbo boost means that the Processor switches off its extra cores and only one runs. That single core runs at a much higher clock speed. This is helpful when you are using applications that are not multicore optimized.

the core i3 should have on chip graphics, dunno about the laptop i3s but the desktop ones have it. go for which ever is cheaper is what i always say for laptops...

It is also going to depend upon for what purpose you are using laptop. If you require a laptop for greater mobility go for core i3 as it consumes less power as it is new architecture.
If you are going to use it like a desktop then & also a cheaper one then use t6600.
If you are going to use application which you think require extensive computing & as a desktop , then use core i 5. Only advantage here is it has many features of core i7. I don't know any games but there might be some which don't run on t6600.
What ever you use it may also be noted that you don't get much performance boost as you should as all programs are compiled with a general purpose flags which are available in all architecture but not architecture one like sse3 sse4 or others. So to get full advantage you will have to compile programs yourself & not all programs are open source . & in windows you will have to be satisfied with the programs available as binary.

All you will get is that you may use many programs simultaneously or many run faster but not much.

Rajan there is right I too go for laptops which are cheaper as desktop is the king when you want to take advantage of high computing. But there are many who just like to have only one.

    Thanks Luke and Rajan.

This laptop is going to be used for programming. .NET 3.5 programming along with may be some TIBCO programming. So I need more RAM as well.

I do not need to play games in laptop. Yet Dell studio comes up with quite high end graphics card. So cost is quite high.

If I opt for T6600, then I will go for Lenovo G series as it is cheaper.

Guyz, how much diff is there between DDR2 800MHz and DDR3 1066 MHz and DDR3 1333 MHz.

    Thanks Suman

practically no difference when it comes to performance.....you MAY get 10 min more battery with DDR3 memory as it runs on low voltage...
